I personally would have to say that the D40 will only replace the D50 for the super consumer photographers, but for the actual photographers, who put a lot of time into it, the D40 will just be a downgrade from any other Nikon Dslr.
Random other thought, did yall notice how all the nikon people are talking about it just normally, then the canon guys always pop in and say something like "just buy a canon, its better than nikon anyways" lol, just somethin i noticed.

You do know that the D40 is smaller than the Rebel, right?

As for the whole "just buy a Canon it is better ..." comment, it is true for the sub-$700 realm. Over that my favorite would be the new D80. Then it goes back to the 5D. I try not to be brand oriented like most people but rather logical and a thorough researcher.

i wasnt attacking people who used canon, i was just pointing out how biased we are for our brand of camera.

And I was not trying to attack Nikon owners. I just get tired of tip-toeing around the Canon-Nikon deal, so I just speak my mind now and if people get upset, too bad for them :)

Edit: Oh and I like the little Santa hats.
