we all love 'em... they've been on for 17 years as of this week (first episode 12/17/89). they provide the most insightful and witty survey of (american) society that i am aware of. they've put words in the OED (d'oh!). they have dozens of characters we reference on a daily basis (well... i do at least). they are quoted more often than shakespeare. i'm sure we can all come up with some great ideas for images that reference characters, quotations, fictional locations, and famous story-lines. i think this could be an interesting challenge.

How about doing animations challenge, South Park is one of the greatest, and the Simpson, and Family guy, all of them are great. Not sure about a challenge with them but would be fun to see all the creative minds here on DPC work and show their creativity with this topic.

Ditto -- I have nearly EVERY episode on tape. I started taping them every week since 1992, and naturally I've bought all of the season DVDs as they've come out.

During the summer, my daughter and I spend nearly every night staying up until midnight watching old episodes. She's 8, and it's funny to hear her quote lines from a bunch of episodes.

I'm sorry, I can't keep silent. :P Simpsons post 1995 is painfully bad.

AND, they finally finally finally have a movie coming out. But will the discerning fans approve?????? Stay tuned folks.

I think my son has about half the available DVDs. They're a hoot! I think this would be a fun challenge.

in a quick runthrough at epguides, i've come up with:
- who shot burns (s7 ep 2)
- radioactive man (s7 ep 3)
- sideshow bob's last gleaming (s7 ep 10)
- a fish called selma (s7 ep 20)
- 22 short films about springfield (s7 ep 22) !!!
- raging abe... hellfish (s 7 ep 23)
- summer of 4'2" (s7 ep 26)
- a milhouse divided (s8 ep 6)
- hurricane neddy (s8 ep8)
- homer's phobia (s8 ep15)
- homer vs the 18th amendment (s8 ep 18)
- city of ny vs homer simpson (s9 ep 1)
- lisa's sax (s9 ep 3)
- the two mrs nahasapeemapetilons (s9 ep 7)
- das bus (s9 ep 14) !!!
- the last temptation of krusty (s9 ep 15)
- the trouble with trillions (s9 ep 20)
- lost our lisa (s9 ep 24)
- viva ned flanders (s10 ep 10)
- thirty minutes over tokyo (s10 ep 23)

i could keep going... and this is just by my memory of the titles. there are plenty more good ones in s 11 through 17 (not to mention those in the above seasons i didn't mention). go write "i will not disparage post 1995 simpsons on public forums again" on the chalk board 1000 times, and then go sit in the corner and think about what you said.

Ack.. ok ok, I concede that it wasn't all bad after '95, and though few and far between, there's still some good episodes (but not many:P). But interestingly, "Homer Simpson vs. New York" was where the Simpson's jumped the shark for me. Now I think it's classic, and laugh every time I see it.

Sorry for the hijack.. but in support of the challenge idea, I think it'd be great to have a generalized "cartoon comedy" challenge as MattO suggests.

Aye Carumba! Louis, just tell him to eat your shorts. ;-)

I tend to agree with Louis that the Simpsons went downhill at some point. Homer's character changed quite a bit from the earlier episodes and the show became much less kid-friendly.

edit to add: although I must admit I am still quite addicted to it. :/

that's my point... it has changed, but still draws many of us in. if it didn't change at all it would have probably faded into the background and grown stale. what's difficult for me to objectively assess is how it would be to someone completely new to the simpsons... not sure if they would receive it the same way.

anyways, since you added this admission, you only have to write on the chalk board 250 times :-)

I agree it has become less kid friendly but I enjoy it more than "do the bart man"...lol. granted I was like 11 back then and did enjoy watching it but as an adult I prefer it now.

The challenge should be Expert Editing so maybe could do something like this one I made for my son a couple years ago...

Oh yeah! I like this challenge idea.

Funny, I was going to say that the Simpson's PRE 1995 kinda sucked...maybe not the content persay, but the animation. Wow, we've come a long way fo sho.

the episode where homer tries to gain all of the weight so he can work at home is, hands-down, the BEST EPISODE EVER. (and it's where one of my websites got it's domain name!)

"hey, mrs. 'doesn't find me sexually attractive anymore' ... i just tripled my productivity!"

"the slim lazy homer you knew is dead! now i'm a BIG FAT DYNAMO!"

Yeah, I'll give you that - that and the Angry Dad episode.

I have always been partial to the episode where Homer gives up duff for 30 days because he got a DWI. But I have about 10 favorite episodes, Also have the 1st 8 seasons on DVD patiently waiting for #9

I also like the Halloween Episode when Homer uses the broken toaster as a time machine and it rains doughnuts.
