The business just purchased an R1800. I've searched the forums for RIP info and paper/ink results but not found much yet. Would anyone care to share links or info on paper/ink used?

For some reason, reading the thread title, I thought an R1800 had passed away. ;-)
I have nothing of value ot add, except a free bump!

For paper I use epson
For ink try ink republic. You will save a TON of money. Epson ink cartiges have 12ml of ink in them. These systems have 100ml of ink. Epson refils will cost $109 (est.) to refill all 8 tanks. I wish I had bought this as soon as I bought my R1800.

Hey stranger!

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but this place is offering a free sample to compare RIP & non-RIP. They list the R1800 on this page

Sounds as though we could all use some guidance from the Kev-meister regarding RIP! (or have ya found something good that you were keeping to yourself lol)

Link to actual sample offer...

Yeah, I've been away from all but the paying stuff lately (wassup, Billy).

I'm trying to learn so you don't wanna know anything from me 'bout this printer. I was just checking into RIP printing on the Epson as I'd read previously that this was the way to go but I've since gotten some guidance from a friend who attended the Epson print academy (that they held in Atlanta). It looks like if you can get the right profile you can produce outstanding results without using a RIP printer.

They suggest two things as regards highest quality printing; soft proof your work (PS choose View | Custom and set the profile for the media the output is intended to be viewed on) and only using RIP when sending output to some larger print businesses to have it printed for you (once I get the idea that the Epson driver & good profiles mitigated my concerns I didn't dig into that too much, tho).

Angela, one reason for getting the R1800 was the archivability so I'm interested to hear about the archivability of the inks you mentioned. It looks like an option to me but I didn't understand the claim to lessen head cleanings nor did I see a statement where the inks longevity and colorfastness had been tested.

Anyone used Ilford or Hahnemule (sp?) 13" rolls? Is the quality of the output noticeably better?

Thanks all,

Kev

I use Ilford smooth pearl paper. No rolls but 13x19 sheets. The results are outsdanding using the profiles provided by Ilford. The results are better than both Epson semi-gloss and premium luster. I also used for some time Hahnemule William turner 310 in 8.5x11 size and it's really an amazing matte paper but most of the matte printing I do is for photos-transformed-to-painting stuff and unfortunately a real canvas does a better job than the william turner.

My biggest mistake with this printer: thinking that a brand new printer shouldn't have to be head aligned...

I've been using the R-1800 for over 1 1/2 years now and still very impressed. I love the Kodak Profesional Luster. Be very careful on re-fills, all of the re-fills I've seen are not of the quality of the original inks. Even the link in one of the first only gives large capacity and not equal quality. Best to stick with the Epson original cartridges at this time I think. Enjoy, it'll make you happy.

I have the R1800 and like the Ilford Pearl as well. I also use greeting card stock from Red River with very nice results.

I would NOT use inks other than Epson. I've heard bad things about clogging and stuff. Don't ruin an expensive printer by skimping on the ink.
