At work we will likely be doing a joint venture with a company in Argentina. I took some Spanish in high school (1983-1984), which I promptly forgot through lack of use. I just finished embarrassing myself on the phone with an Argentinian receptionist and have decided I need to re-learn Spanish.

The most convenient method would be to buy a course which I could put on my iPod and listen to while I commute to and from work. I don't mind if people think I'm insane on the train repeating phrases in Spanish, and I'm not concerned with written Spanish.

Any suggestions?

I'll teach you all the Spanish you need if you take me along to Argentina. I can even teach you the Argentinian accent/intonation. Pretty please? :)

But then, you're just talking to Argentinians, not going there :(

My daughter (smartypants) is a French 3 student in high school and she listens to a variety of French langauge podcasts to help sharpen her listening. I'm not sure of the "learning" end of things, but I'd bet its outthere. iTunes is the place to start.

I took Spanish and I don't see how anybody could learn it from a tape. You might be able to learn specific phrases but speaking it fluently and correctly using verbs would be almost immpossible I would think without dedicating alot of time to it.

Who says? I may get a chance to ride a horse around on some cool new property. I tend to get to tour around as a perk. Of course this JV is in Nevada, but we may do a property down there too.

I learned English verbally, and I was just a little kid. :-P

I have a suggestion that's going to sound silly, but I think it might work. Get some music sung by Argentinians. Listen to the intonation (not so much the words or their meaning, not even so much the accent) but the intonation. The ups and downs of how things flow. Maybe, if you can find it, even better than songs get some news-reports or someone reading in Argentinian.

When it comes to learning a language, one of the hardest things is to get the feel of the language right. You can know the words, you can even know how to produce the accents, but if the feel is off, you're going to sound like a foreigner.

When I was teaching English to immigrants from Mexico in the USA, we would do even physical exercises to get the intonation. We'd take a sentence and sort of act it out physically going up and down with the movement of the language. It works.

I know it's not the whole story, but it might help. If you manage to "sound like" an Argentinian, even if the words are not quite right, you're going to communicate better.

This is old stuff, but sometimes still fun to listen to: Les Luthier. It's a group from Argentina that does (or did?) all sorts of interesting stuff. They speak a lot besides making music with (sometimes curious) instruments.

I'm sure you did and everybody around you spoke it on a daily basis.
I'm not saying you can't learn it that way, I just think it would be difficult.
