I love to visit Dax-'s profile
This is my attempt to learn something from her.

Most pleasing to the eye.

neat, I think you've got the gaussian blur part good....

now maybe try playing around with gradients and gradient maps and use layer masks to create different kinds of smooth flowing colors

whoops - sorry all - got that fixed.

I am still just a novice with ps... come to that, I am still a novice photographer. But I am enjoying this imensely!

Okay, I am always reading that someone should use gradients. What does this do? I can draw a gradient from one side to another in CS2 but all this does is stick a big solid gradient in front of the picture. What am I missing? I use the gradient tool all the time when I am creating images for web design but that is very different from what you are talking about I am sure.

skylercall,

People are usually refering to gradients as applied to a mask. They help one to fade in some change affected to the image. This is a poor explaonation, but if you google photoshop and mask and gradient together... that should yield many tutorials.

wow, cannot type or spell this evening.

Try making a gradient layer and then play around with blending modes and opacities...

For example, take a water photo and put a gradient layer of say blue to green and change the blending mode of the gradient layer to soft light and then play with the opacity...

Here an exemple

Added
adjustment layer Gradient map (black to white) mode=darken
adjustment layer Levels = auto
adjustment layer Curves
adjustment layer Hue/sat=+30

This looks good. It is just a tad bit too dark for me though.

Now you just need to apply some texture and you'll be close to Dax- style

your monitor may not be calibrated correctly if you're talking about De Sousa's version of the shot, cuz it doesn't look very dark to me at all

Jorge and Amanda. I think you are right about the lack of texture. I actually combined two shots in an attempt to beef up the texture... I took one really shallow dof of the berry cluster so that I would be able to select it easily, and I took another unfocused shot of the leaves of the plant. I edited both and pasted the leaves in and then blurred that layer selectively.

...
I need to learn how to add texture while retaining the dreamy blur.

Jorge - That is a lovely edit, thanks.
