I thought I'd open a thread to discuss early sumissions for a possible (but expected) Best of 2007 challenge.

There are two groups of voters here on DPC, the casual voter and the hardcore DPC forum participant.

I am not concerned about the casual voter. They, on average, have no idea what is in my portfolio, what has been discussed, and any picture I submit will be new and fresh to them.

What shall we think though about the hardcore participant? They probably make up between 20-40% of any challenge voting block and they will probably recognize shots I have in my portfolio as being mine.

Is it still reasonable to expect an unbiased (for or against) assessment from these people when voting comes around? I'm pretty sure my best shot of the year is a shot that has been discussed previously, but wasn't entered in a challenge (and isn't simply a duplicate shot).

I thought we could discuss and come to a consensus as to what to do as both entrant and voter when we see or submit a shot that has been seen before.

Last time I checked, this year was 2006.

Haha, ya, ya, ya. OK, someone change that title for me so I can get some serious replies instead of people simply pointing out my incompetence.

Let your conscience be your guide.

[My opinion] If it's already posted to your portfolio, move it to the workshop folder when you submit it.

If posted to a forum thread specifically for that image, I probably wouldn't submit it. But that's just me, making a thread just for that image would have drawn specific attention to it that I don't feel entries should have. But, on the other hand, if it was just mentioned in passing, or in one of the many game threads, I wouldn't have a problem with submitting it. [/My opinion]

David

Edited to add: I wouldn't have a problem with a 'Best of' being made intentionally nonconfidential. Include credit while voting. I know that opens a whole new mess of arguements, but this thread does address a concern that is very common in these 'Best of' challenges. Not many are going to keep a photo secret from the community until the end of the year. So, even if the scores were to be kept seperate from the rest of the site stats, I wouldn't be opposed to a credited 'Best of'.

I say your best is your best! I am going to post my best and see what happens. I myself will be open and objective and vote on the merits but that's just me.

ETA: In other words I don't care if it has been posted and discussed or not.

I agree with Waz - submit what you want. Alot of images are easily identifiable in regular challenges anyway by style, technique or model. You will have those that will vote down because of who you are, most likely countered by those who will vote you up because of who you are followed by the vast majority who will vote the image what they honestly feel it deserves.

It's inherent in a 'best of' challenge that some photos will have been seen before. In the past etiquette seems to have been that you move your entry to your workshop folder if it's in your portfolio, such that people can't go searching for it to confirm that it's yours, but don't worry about people having seen it in the past. Many of the entries will have been shared previously. Even in challenges where the photos haven't been shared before, photographers sometimes get recognized for their style. It's not the end of the world. Just don't post a discussion thread of a photo you intend to use in the last weeks of December and all will be well.

My experience is that most voters here seem to be very objective even if they know or think they know who has submitted the photo. I say go with your best shot whether it is recognizable or not. If it is a good shot I believe the votes will reflect the quality and imagination of the shot regardless of who submitted it.

I don't think this is the case at all.

At any rate for a best of the year challenge, I think anything should go. If it was shot in the year, entered in a challenge or not, posted in the forums or not - whatever. It's your best shot of the year, toss it in the hat and let's vote. If it's going to be Best of the Year with three pages of rules and stipulations, why bother doing it at all.

I'm going to give all 10's. But I'm giving DrAchoo a 1.

We've never had a serious (or even measurably non-serious) problem with the "Best Of"s in the past... so I would stop worrying about it.

my opinion - an image that has not been discussed would do better, but probably not significantly better.

your stuff sucks anyway ... better you just don't play

By "Best of 2005" entry had been posted in a forum some months before the challenge was officially announced; it even had some comments.

Don't forget - you can't shift a file already in your portfolio into the challenge. You'll need to upload the file all over again on the challenge entry page. After the challenge is over, you'll have two separate pictures in your portfolio (one permanent (challenge) and one you can delete) with separate comments and favorites. At least, that's how it worked for me.
