While artistic, it's still criminal -- so while some is bright and neat... it still demonstrates the deterioration of an area.

I've heard it said that a true sign of how safe an area is is how long graffiti is allowed to stay put.

Not all graffiti is criminal. Some of the better looking graffiti is commissioned by businesses to gain some attention. The photos I took are from "Graffiti Alley" in Toronto, and were all done with permission.

A quick Google revealed this tidbit of information relative to the approach some cities have relative to graffiti.Legal Graffiti

Most graffiti is illegal where I live, and unfortunately the city holds the business owners responsible for removing it, within a very short time frame and at their own expense.

This IS an old thread...

I love graffiti, in the right places (not on my house please :P)...

We have a street in Melbourne dedicated to graffiti artists by the council. boysetsfire showed you a little of it earlier in the thread, and here are a couple more.

I would argue then (respectfully, SC, respectfully), that this would not then be "graffiti" per se, it would be commissioned art.

So while it would give the illusion of such, true graffiti -- by most everyone's understanding -- would be illegal. What you're talking about it more like a wall mural, even though done with a tagger's flair.
