Another vote here for the Canon S3 IS. In addition to all said prior, it has a viewfinder. Makes it a) more conventional, and b) easier to compose a photo in bright daylight. Also, the LCD is a swivel variety, so you can use it like most p&s models, but also in ground-level or "periscopic" modes by swiveling the view-screen. And with Image Stabilization, it is more forgiving in normal light.
