I just tried mounting my new 580ex flash on an old flash bracket I had. The mount fits yet the flash pins may be just touching the metal jaws of the bracket. I can't fully test the setup because I haven't purchased a cord yet. However, with the flash mounted to the bracket, none of the flash buttons work (including test firing). Once I take it off the bracket, everything works fine. Is this by design (i.e. the flash senses it's on a bracket and is expecting a cord) or do I need a different bracket?
Thanks,
Steven

You mean the flash bracket itself has a hotshoe mount on it?
The two flash brackets I have used, had to have the hotshoe mount added after-the-fact. Which is good, because the "cord" you are speaking of, comes with the hotshoe mount on it. So you'll be replacing the hotshoe mount anyway....

Once you get a cord you'll be fine. When I shoot wireless with my 580 on a metal umbrella holder, the contact pins on the bottom of the flash sometimes makes contact with the metal shoe and causes it to flash once or twice until it's seated properly. |
