Going for a few days soon to Sugarbush. Doesn't look like much skiing so I was wondering if people had ideas for winter hikes and photogenic landscape areas!
We will be staying in Warren VT at a B&B.
Ideas? Anyone here live around there (if my family goes skiing one day without me, I'd love to get together for a photo-hike!)

Are you driving there? Which road are you taking? If you take 89, getting off at Exit 10 will take you toward Sugarbush. It's about a half hour drive from the exit I believe. The towns you will go through are so cute...very "villagy". You are bound to get some very country shots.
I went to college at the University of Vermont, and I took 89 to get there...so that is the only way I know how to go... But I took that exit to go to Sugarbush Mtn a few times and I remember it being gorgeous. :) Have fun! |

Well I live about an hour away from Sugarbush. For a day hike or any photo opportunities just drive around the are. Warren is great for rustic photography, especially the Warren store.(Trust me, get the carrot cake. Homemade everyday!!! TO DIE FOR.) There really isn't a bad place to go shooting and as for skiing, you will be very suprised at how well Sugarbush does with snowmaking. If you want a real challenge try Mad River Glen, its just on the other side of the MT. and is all natural, also, no snowbaorders allowed though. If you are going to be here for a Monday let me know, just PM me. |

Hey Neil,
These 2 waterfalls are roadside in Warren,
And they are not far from sugarbush. (10 min or so) Might be interesting in the snow or what have you. If you are driving, and plan to go thru woodstock there is a nice covered bridge there as well.
Enjoy.

Post trip report. We didn't have good weather for photography or skiing. But we stayed in a very nice bed and breakfast that I'll recommend here. It was the Sugartree Inn, and it's very close to Lincoln peak (one of the two peaks at Sugarbush).
The owners of the B&B, Graham and Maxine, were the nicest couple. Invited my whole family to Christmas dinner with a number of the local inn-keepers. We had fun and I learned a bit about the B&B world as well. They were from London and they uprooted their world (like a number of the innkeepers) to find a nice, quiet life in a beautiful place.
I am planning to go back there sometime in the coming year primarily for photography. Maybe the fall but maybe sooner. If people are interested, perhaps we can plan an official photo GTG there! Meanwhile, if you decide to head that way, look into staying at the Sugartree. Highly recommended.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay! I've done a bit of research online, and it turns out there are quite a few waterfalls up in that area, and Mt. Mansfield, the tallest mountain in VT, is nearby too. I'm heading up there tomorrow to scope it out and shoot some of the falls (Mansfield is closed for the winter, I've been told...how do you close a mountain?)
Knowing VT, autumn should be a great time to go shooting up there, although through the spring and summer it'd be good too. I'm up for a GTG and I'll help plan it, if you like.

Mansfield is used as resort. One side of the Mt. is really the Stowe resorts area. The Havens Notch road between Smugglers Notch and Stowe is closed during the winter. It gets real nasty up there. However you can access parts of Mt. Mansfeild from the Smuggs side, just lots of hiking. The locals will hike up there to the ridge of Mansfiled and ski the chutes and backcountry. |

FYI - in the summer both smugglers notch and stowe resorts offer quite a range of activities. there are some nice biking/hiking trails, as well as just some nice scenery. plus the temps are generally alot easier to handle ;}
