even knowing what country you are in might make a good start to getting some info.

Wouldn't self contained battery units be better?

//www.lumedyne.com/

Lumedyne is what I used a few years back. Portable and powerfull.

why would they be better?

do they work with continuous lighting or just strobes?

yeah, i've been looking at alien bees a lot but my biggest question is whether or not i can use regular strobes with the portable power pack (the vagabond) that the alien bees come with.

It looks like you plug into an AC unit, while other strobes appear to have a different set up.

If you go the generator path make sure it's got clean output (Honda units seem to be the standard but they come at a price) otherwise put a power scrubber of some sort to avoid spikes hitting the gear (I have heard of people using UPS for this but you would probably be better off with a regulator of some sort).

Battery with a pure sine wave power inverter. Make your own it's cheaper for more power.

Hi Evan;

There must be a pro shop somewhere in Chicago that you could go to with all your questions. Just tell them what your interested in. These guys, for the the most part, know their stuff. All the equipment will be there to poke at. It can be a real learning experience. The pro shops are not just for pros. Hey, they'll sell to anybody.

Cheers

are the shops actually called "Pro Shops" or are you just reffering to any photo shop in general?

No it's a general reference term. Though I am not referring to just any retail photography store.

Here in Toronto there is a Professional type photography store called Vistek. You can look them up at www.vistek.ca . Just by looking at the inventory you can tell they are not just a regular "point and shoot" retailer. In Chicago I found a place called "Calumet" that appears to have the sort of thing your looking for. I'm sure, given the size of Chicago there are others as well.

Cheers

I've seen these around before, and they have the complete kits you're looking for for a decent price, but haven't used them personally so I can't give them a review for you: JTL Mobilight.
