I have a problem with the Auto-Focus on my D200 – basically it isn’t workingâ€Â¦ as in it doesn’t do anything.
I’ve tried both my lenses – AF-S Nikkor 12-24 and AF-S Nikkor 18-200.
Both lenses are set to M/A
I’ve reset the Shooting and Custom Setting Menus back to their default settings.
Battery is fully charged.
Ok – probably red-herrings but here’s some additional stuffâ€Â¦
This happened to me once before after I used a Manual Only lens (Nikon Series E 100mm) on the D200– when I put an AF lens back on the AutoFocus wouldn’t kick in. I played around with the menu settings, - at the time I had auto-focus disabled on the shutter release, I enabled it, then disabled it again and that seemed to clear the problem (ie at that time I was auto focusing using the AF-ON button).
I assumed it was some kind of glitch but felt I could live with it.
This time, however, it occurred after I switched between 2 AF lenses – and re-setting the menus hasn’t cured it.
When the Vibration Reduction is set ON on the 18-200 I can hear it kick in (but the lens is still out of focus of course).
When it happened the battery had about quarter charge left – I have since fully charged the battery.
Had the camera for about 10 months - been working fine apart from these two instances.
Any ideas as to anything else I might have done / not done.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

this is going to sound like an over obvious question. But are you turning the camera off before you change glass? I have forgotten to turn mine off before I swap lenses and had the same thing happen.

Whenever I have issues with anything that I can't figure out I first reset my camera to it's original factory settings out of the box. If that doesn't get me to where I want to be I reinstall the firmware.
After that, go to the pro's. |

Another over-obvious question: Is your C/S/M switch on the body set to C or S? |

Guys - thanks for your time - I really appreciate it.
After 48 hours of fretting over this I am now VERY red faced - I just spotted I'd knocked the Focus Select button on the camera body to M.
To say I'm embarrased is an understatement - I really do appreciate that I took up your time.
Having said that....

I didn't know you were supposed to do that - so I've learnt something! I do turn it off but pretty much without thinking - I'll make sure I do that consciously in future

Ok - didn't realise that was an option either - I guess I can download the firmware from Nikon somewhere (I don't recall any discs with the camera) - I'll go check that out, I presume they may do firmware updates from time to time too so thanks.
Despite this being a dumb thread in the end - I actually learnt something!
Edit.....

We just leap-frogged each other on this - thanks for taking the time to post and yes - you got it in one!
