I don't know if this has been addressed before but how does everyone feel about people defending their image by responding to commenters before voting is complete. I have never done it before but I frequently get responses to comments I have made during a challenge. If it is common practice I'd like to know as I have recieved some comments on my image that I feel are a little off base and I want to respond...but, if the practice is "frowned-upon" I will continue to do as I have in the past and wait until voting is complete to respond. |

This has been discussed before, hundreds of times. The general consensus is that it's in bad taste to respond to a comment with a PM while voting is in process. However, people continue to do it. There's not a lot you can do. I ignore them and go on with my business. |

It's not "illegal" per se, but just remember a response to a comment might not always go as well as you'd hope.

It use to be the concensus was to not contact, but then there was nothing preventing it. Now there is an option in each users preferences that hides their identity during voting if they don't want to be contacted until afterwards. If the commenter chooses to remain identifiable during voting, respond as you see fit.
However, there is a very strong [read: maniacal :) ] portion of the community that view any attempt to contact as an attempt at vote manipulation -- even when the commentor permits it by staying identifiable!
For this reason, use caution with a stong dose of common sense before replying to a comment during voting. Consider first if there is any reason to contact now rather than later. Reasons that do not amount to 'correcting' the commentors view of the image are generally best.
Let your conscience be your guide, and above all else exercise deplomacy when responding to a comment you do not agree with.
If by 'off base' you mean the comments were in some way offensive to you (or others) the best course of action is to use the Report Post button on the comment to inform the SC of it.

I've done it a few times myself. I usually will preface it with "since you've already voted, blah blah blah" but it's only on a rare occasion. I don't really mind if someone does it to me. I can't think of any as of late but I wasn't offended. |

I don't think it's a big deal personally. If someone has the right to say what they'd like about your image why do you not have to right to reply to it? I know vote manipulation blah blah blah. When I do it however I'm not hoping for a change in vote, just a bit of understanding. I'd like responses on comments I left if someone had a problem with it.
Then again I don't mind respectful debate while others hate it. So I guess I'm part of the minority on this topic. |

David.C said it best, and I will only add that when you go to the commenter's profile page to PM, you can sometime note in "remarks" if the photographer welcomes comments during competition (or not). |

I sometimes contact someone, but I usually preface it with "I'm not contacting you to try to change your vote. Rather ..."
Like, sometimes someone will ask where something was shot. Or they'll ask about some other aspect of the image.
Other times, someone's comment has turned on a light in my head, or shown me that I didn't communicate what I intended.
Or they'll comment on some aspect of the editing, and I'd like to hear more or discuss it with them.
I appreciate all those kinds of responses to my comments, and I have yet to have someone come back at me angrily for contacting them.

I don't know if there is a "concensus" one way or the other. I've heard some people say they don't like it and some say they don't mind. To add one more vote to the mix, I don't mind at all. Actually I've only ever received one comment about one of my comments and that was fine.
I view it a bit the same way I view adding frames to images. People who hate it might deduct points for doing it whereas people who don't mind will probably not add points for doindg it. (Actually I would be interested to know if anyone who disapproves of it would reduce their vote because someone contacted them because I am making a very big assumption about that)
If a ribbon or a high score is your main objective then I'd suggest to wait until the challenge is over. If not and you are a bit more layed-back I'd say just do what ever you want within the site rules. |

I always contact them. How else would I get their address to send them bribes? :P |

That explains a great deal about your avg. score. Speaking of which, I'm still waiting for back payment on that soap bubble.

I'm pretty sure I mailed it to you. Maybe it got lost? |

When someone PM's me about their image if I give a comment that would indicate a low score, I usually go back and review the photo. Most often I'll adjust the score even lower. |

I have been told, in no uncertain terms, that we "should appreciate each and every vote". And, "everyone is entitled to their opinion". And, "we should listen to what our critics are saying".
So, I don't respond to out-of-line comments. Nor, do I report comments that step over-the-line. It's not worth letting someone else wreck your day.
I have an entry in the "sticky" challenge. Just this morning I received the following comment:
"Uh... whats sticky about this? 1, completely irrelavent [SIC] to the challenge"
Now that's ridiculous and insulting. My entry is absolutely "sticky", but the image must be outside of and beyond the life experience of this person. I do believe some members at DPChallenge are young, immature and "not deep thinkers". (not new news!) But, this person declared my image a dnmc and gave me a "1". The image is better than a "1". Not very fair. But, there's nothing to be done about this. It's part of the culture here.
So, let 'em have their "fun". Ignore 'em and walk away. |
