"Black and White" adjustment layer with six sliders to adjust tonal relationships is pretty nice. It makes for plenty of beautiful potential variance in contrasts. (It also has a pair of hue/sat sliders to add tint for duotone.) |

There's also a lot to be said for the interface changes. Being able to hide the toolbar and palettes and have them reappear by hovering the mouse over the edge of the app is handy.
Edit.. wow.. smart filters are good. Non-destructive maskable filters that you can turn on and off. Awesome.

Yes, but note that you must have a CS2 serial number to keep it activated. Otherwise, the software expires in a couple of days. |

did they FINALLY make unsharp mask an adjustment layer or the like?
god, i'm sick of having two different layers (one labeled "sharpened") in every PSD file |

Indeed they did. You have to convert the layer into a smart layer first though. |

Never expected to fall in love but CS3 is looking pretty darn good! The new RAW conversion is something else.... really hope the upgrade price is not out of my range,or I'll have to cash in those retirement savings!
Thanks all for the heads up! |

Ditto! I've just played with it, after doing a conversion "my way." I have to say, it's like Channel Mixer on steroids for B+W conversion. I will most likely be using this instead of the Channel Mixer from here on out. Kudos Adobe!

And best of all, it's BASIC LEGAL... It may be time for a reevaluation of the basic ruleset... The way things stand now, basic rules divide into two groups: "have CS2/3" and "others". Seriously.... When shadow/highlight was okayed for basic, the dam was burst...

Yeh, but the B+W Adjustment Layer doesn't do anything that a Channel Mixer layer and a bit of duotoning or hue/Sat work won't approximate. It's just one *heck* of a lot faster this way.
I've been working on a portrait today, and tried it my traditional way, and with the new tool. I still like the final output of my traditional method slightly better, and I think I have more flexibility, but my old workflow does have some warts, like:
- It involves an intermediate conversion to 8-bit grayscale so doutoning will work (still won't work on 16-bit grays in CS3) :-P
- It is destructive, whereas the new tool is completely reversible at the click of a button.
