Someday soon Talj and I plan to take my ickle smart brabus roadster coupe to see the Aurora Borealis and (of course) take some stunning photographs.
Norway seems to be the best spot as we will be driving, am thinking of driving up from Norfolk to Leeds (to pick T up) then off to Newcastle and the ferry over to Bergen. Where to now? would appreciate some first hand experience from you guys ;)
Hey, we may even manage a couple of GTG's on the trip :)

Check out this link to get the Magnetic Latitude for various cities. It's different from the normal latitude we think of. The higher that number, the better chance you will have of seeing them.
Of course you want a place with clear skies too.

Are you set on taking the ferry to Bergen? If not and you have the time i highly suggest you take the ferry to Kristiansand instead :) its a longer drive of course (its right in the south) but i can tell you from personal experience you get some spectacular scenery! you can join the E6 (main road north) just before Dovrefjell where if the weather is good (which granted isnt that likely in norway haha) the views are simply stunning.
I highly advise you to stop off at Sognefjord on your drive up if you are not pressed for time, you wont regret it.
edit: be aware that winter tires are required between Nov and April

Tromsø, Alta, and especially Hammerfest:) closer to the north pole you won't get unless you are on the north pole already.
and yes, Hurtigruta from Bergen al the way up to Kirkenes is once in a lifetime experience:) |

I was wondering how many DPC'ers live in Norway??
My 'tour organiser' ( Ecce Signum) is far too quiet and although this trip of ours is a year + away I just wanted to get a feel for the kind of roads / scenery / people we might be able to see on our travels :o)
So Norwegian DPC'ers step up and tell me all the do's and don'ts of driving through your country! :o)

Can you pick me up along the way?
I'm in Sheffield and am strong enough to hang onto the roof all the way! :P

LOL Ben, I'd love to take you along but the BRC has just 2 seats and Ecce Signum intends to have the roof down most of the way! A few very warm layers of clothing, a good woolly hat, scarf and gloves will be needed for me I think....oh and the lovely feel of the heated seats! :o)
Now the Peak District later in the year would be a great idea...if you fancy a GTG give me a shout :o)

Best driving advice - Don't even think of driving after any amount of drinking. The legal limit for blood alcohol is .02 (.08 in most of the US). Mouthwash will register .02.
Lots of natural beauty to photograph there.

Hi David, great images! Have you done a lot of driving in Norway? I am wondering how easy and safe it is to just pull up at the side of the road and set the camera up?
Cheers,
Natalya :o)

I haven't done a lot of driving myself, but just last month I went on a road trip with my friend Trollman
Where are you going in Norway?
The roads are good, you have to be careful in the mountain passes where the wind and snow can be interesting. The Expert Editing shot Mountain Moonrise was taken on that trip. Just like here, you'll be able to pull over in some place but not others. We missed one thing I wanted to take a picture of but couldn't find a place to pull over. We were OK most of the time. The roads are not Interstates like in the US. So in some cases it might be easier.
Daylight is pretty short this time of year, about 4-5 hours tops if you are in the South part of the country. Gets shorter as you go North. Our route was pretty much due West from Oslo.

Avoid long nights in the cold looking at an empty sky (been there done that) and keep an eye on Aurora Forecasts and activity:
Aurora Forecast
(maps of Alaska, Europe, Antarctica etc)
Activity measurements with map

Basically when I was in hospital last month to cheer me up Andi asked me what I would really like to do once I was well. I said....see the Aurora Borealis....but drive to see it in his car. There was something about the thought of the heated seats on, roof down starring at the stars as we drive along!
The plan, which isn't very detailed at all, is basically to go from Newcastle here in the UK to Bergen and then drive! Thats as far as we have got!
By posting here I was hoping for ideas on roads, places to stay, possible GTG's along the way etc etc. Any information Norwiegians or people that have visited Norway can throw at me will be gratefully received!:o)

Nope. :(
But I am going to try again next week. End of the week should be a reasonable time I think, I just hope the weather is better by then. (Salla, Finland. At the moment a lot of clouds and snow with more of the same predicted till at least wednesday).

Hey, I have been thinking! Mainly about the miles the ickle brc will be covering. Am thinking Hammerfest would be the best place to end up, I doubt we'd get so far North so Tromso would be another great spot and finally Narvik.
I doubt even Tromso is really 'doable' on a 2 week break as we wouldn't just be driving, every 5 minutes we'd be stopping to take pics!
Home to Newcastle (via Leeds) is 250 miles
Newcastle to Narvik = 1584
Newcastle to Tromso = 1833
Newcastle to Hammerfest = 2235
Remembering we have to get back as well Hammerfest is a 5,000 mile round trip and we will be sightseing. I'm sure you'd still have a great break even if we only made it to Narvik and maybe miss the AB?
August Bank Holiday will be a good test for us (if your recovered from the op)The BritBall Rally is a mere 1,000 miles over 2 and a half days ;)
