Dear fellow DPC'ers,

I would appreciate your advice in determining the royalty to ask for one of my images.
I've been contacted by an advertising firm who wishes to use one of my images in an ad campaign for a pharmaceutical client.
The image size will be 10, 5 cm x 6, 5 cm and the ad will be published 6 times in a newspaper with a circulation of around 100.000.

Though I am aware there are on-line royalty calculators (somewhere) I would very much appreciate real-life advice.

Thanks,

Tom.

Royalties are different that usage fees. example: recording artists or authors get a percentage of each piece of music or book sold in a certain form... they get a "royalty".

What your looking for is a price for a specific usage. They are going to "rent" the photo from you for a specific time and use. (Make sure your contract defines the use and length, clearly and that they are not allowed to run it in other places or for a longer period of time without a renegotiation.)

You have several things going for you in which to ask a fair price. First 10.5x6.5 is a decent size ( I do not not know the full size of your newspaper) they often pay based on the size in full, 1/2 (or major element) or 1/4 size relative to the full page size. Also you need to ask them if they are after exclusive rights (meaning you can't sell it to another entity ever or for a specific time allotment) or if they are just after first time rights (meaning you can sell it again before too long) If they want exclusive rights to the image, you need to give them a higher price. You also need to give them a higher price if it is a "rare" image.... something you will not be able to take again or it would be very difficult to recreate. Also consider the product or business it will be representing.

I know all this doesn't give you an actual price but I hope it gives you enough info to make a decent sale. Don't undercut yourself and don't be afraid to negotiate. BTW one of the price calculators on the internet suggested that the high end would be about $650.00, the low end about $325.00 for one time use (not the run of 5-6 times so adjust accordingly) at 1/2 page for a circulation of 50,000 - 100,000 so aim for something in the middle and adjust for number of times used.

Hope that helps you some.
