Maybe this will help someone if they get a similar problem.
I have been using my Mac G5 with my Fuji S3Pro for about a year now, and have been uploading from the camera since my CF reader quit working. I lost part of a day's shooting because with Mac, you need to eject the camera before unhooking it from the computer. The batteries went dead in the Fuji, and the computer saw it as unplugged I guess. It scrambles the card in the Fuji for some reason if you unplug during uploading. I thought I had to reformat the CF card.
I later found that if I put in fresh batteries, and plug it into the Mac again, then leave it alone for a while, everything will sort itself out and be fine, but it may take 20 or 30 minutes to do it.
I don't know if it's just a Mac thing with Fuji, or with CF or if it applies to other cameras as well.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I was not sure where to post this, and searched for the same situation posted and could not find anything like it.

what does the manual say? did you try and recover the lost files after your format?
only time i've had my camera hooked up to my laptop is to shoot tethered - i didn't have a CF card in at the time.. i use a card reader the rest of the time..

Bobster, The lost files were not of any major importance, just documenting photos of rapidly dissappearing open country side in this area of Florida. It was no trouble to reshoot them. It could have been bad had it involved people or commercial "one chance" photos like a wedding.

| i have never had that problem with my cards/camera or G5 from unplugging, but with my 400d iphoto does not read those cards and the rescue pro software reads them just fine, you may want to try the rescue pro software? |

You really shouldn't just unplug any device when uploading or downloading on any computer. This apparently happens with iPods also. That is why the iPods have a big warning on the screen.
My CF reader quit also (unknown reason) and I have been uploading with the camera and once forgot to "eject" it and turn the camera off after about 4 hours. Good thing my D70 has a great battery. Everything was already downloaded. I had to "force" an unmount of the camera through DIsk Utility. Reformatted the card after, but that is my normal procedure, so not sure if it mucked up files or not.

I forgot to mention in the original post in this thread that I was using firewire, and iPhoto during the download that whacked the card out. It didn't hurt the CF card, but when I turned the camera on after unplugging it from the computer, a warning about the card came up in the display screen on the camera. The firewire connection may have something to do with how it happened to me. An in-camera reformat put the card back to normal, but erased the card as with a normal reformat.
CF readers are cheap now on the "bay" so it makes sense to have one. I'm not sure if it's better mechanically for the camera, to plug and unplug cards all the time, or to plug and unplug the computer connector for each upload. I saw a thread a couple of days ago about someone having bent and broken or missing pins in their CF connector in a Canon.
I will buy a new multi socket card reader next week, as I have a new S3 Fuji coming in the mail, and want the option to upload jpeg to any usb computer port without tying up the camera.
Correct on the don't unplug any device advice Dacrazyrn.
Ellamay, There may be an iPhoto update now for the 400d in the .mac support, downloads site if you look. I am still running OSX 3.9, so a lot of the newer software like "aperture" will not work with my G5 until I upgrade the OS to Tiger, hopefully for Christmas as a little present for my computer.
