Dear all,
Pease help me with your oppinion.
I decided to buy Tamron 28-75 2.8 for Xmas. I did my homework, i read reviews on FM and other sources, the price is in the budget. However a friend recommende the 17-50 2.8, today, wich is not much expensive but is out of my reach right now.
I currently own:
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro for Canon
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
I have just started to like more to work with wide angle.
The question
A) buy now the 28-75 enjoy it and later buy a real wide angle
B) Replace my kit lens range and buy the 17-50 later next year.
Please, if you have time, give me a piece of advice
Thank you.
Tibi

Damn man, we have way too much in common. I own the same equipment and I too have asked this same question.
I think I have decided to get the 28-75mm and then pick up a wide angle zoom later. Maybe even the Canon 17-40 f/4.0L glass, as it is not much more money than the Tamron 17-50mm. |

I have the 28-75 and I love it for the cash you cant go wrong I believe and I also had the similar setup as you.
As TJinGuy said 17-40l will be my next purchase when I get the 5d.

Hi there,
I had EXACTLY the same lenses as you (and also the Zenitar fish eye)and then purchased the Tamron 28-75mm which I ADORE!
I was SO IMPRESSED by this lens I then went on to buy the Tamron 17-35mm which I have only JUST recently acquired, so can't really tell you much about it.
I think I LOVE my 28-75 so much that for now I'd be hard pressed to take the time to play with my others!
I would not hesitate to recommend the Tamron 28-75mm - JUST DO IT - GRIN! |

Hey Guys,
Thanks a lot for the input. I am pretty much set for the 28-75 with a proper wide angle to follow (thnx to microstock hihi).
If I'll get I'll surely let you know what I think.

I'd advice the 17-50. It's a great lens and the 28-75 is a serious lack of wide angle. And you can use your next amount of cash on an ultra wide angle ;)

| I have EXACTLY the same camera/lens setup as you do ... and am getting the 28-75 for Christmas ... I'm so excited I can hardly wait ... all I hear are great things about that lens ... I'd say "Go For It!!!" |

I had a look at 2 lenses the other day and was totally impressed with both.
Tamron 17-50 f2.8
Sigma 18-50 f2.8
I was initially interested in the Nikon 17-35 f2.8 at 3 times the price for used... now I am seriously thinking about the Tamron or Sigma.. both are very good with the Sigma being of slightly better built quality and the Tamrom being very slightly sharper with colours.
Either pieces of glass will make a fine addition to any collection. |

My idea was to keep the kit for the wide part, just for necessities as I am not a great wide-angeler...
Thanks for advices. Keep on pouring them (to be honest as most of this threads like this are we need more to confirm the decisions made subconsciously)

The 28-75 by itself is bigger than your kit-lens if I'm right. So you want to carry a bigger lens and your current lens, instead buying one that takes both places?
In most situations it's easier to take a step closer and compensate the 50mm than to take a step away to compensate the 28mm.
Do keep in mind that the 28-75 on your camera has even -less- wide angle than a point and shoot digital camera.

Good plan. The 28-75 is my favorite general-purpose lens, and you can always use the kit lens for wide angle. You'll be much happier if you save up for a Tokina 12-24 or Canon 10-22 for REAL wide angle work later on. |

I agree with scalvert on this one. Get the 28-75mm now and get a real wide angle lens later. Until then, you have the kit lens to use for a wide angle. While it isn't the greatest, it is still very useable. I think you'll be much more happy with a Canon 10-22mm or a Tokina 12-24mm lens in the future.

Got it. Fine lens and sharp. Agree with the slow focus in dark but hey.
I will post some test pics. The wide is OK but the extra 75 gives a nice reach. It's light and gives a good grip and not so shaky hands. I also bought a remote control. Hmmm never thought is so handy.
Oh the sharpness really comes close to the 50 1.8
Just wanted to share...

I'm looking to replace my kit lens and I'm currently considering the Tamron 28-75 also. So I thought I'd bump this existing thread to see if I could get any more feedback.
Thanks to all that have already posted but I know there's about 350 owners out there that may have some more info.

Looks like scalvert , goodman , Qart and Bear_Music have done some very nice work with this lens.
Thanks in advance for your help! |

Thanks Shannon!
You covered the basics, lol
I guess I'm just looking for your general impressions. Are you happy with it? Would you buy it again or try something else in it's place? Have you had any situations where it didn't perform as you had hoped or when it supassed your expecations?
Thanks
