Sigma makes the 50-500 Bigma... can't get much more full range than that...
But the reason they don't make a P&S style lens for a DSLR is a mater of sensor size and overall focal length. Even a P&S with 8x optical zoom still has a very short focal length.

I think Sigma also make the Bigmonster at 50mm to 1000mm. Correct me if I am wrong...I can't seem to find the link for it from months ago.

Sigma also do a 28-300 lens for Canon and Nikon, but the optical quality isn't great at either end of the zoom range. It's still "okay" though, and gets recommendations as a good one-size-fits-all lens.
I guess the whole point of an SLR is that you can choose what lenses suit your photography needs - whether it's fast lenses for low-light, wide angle for landscapes, or a telephoto zoom for wildlife. You can buy what you want and keep 'em when you upgrade the camera body (well, mostly).
The "bridge" cameras coming out now, like the Fuji 9500, are a good compromise if you want a one-size-fits-all lens. Having said that, looking at the test results versus an entry level SLR, the image quality just wasn't on the same level. |

It would be frigging expensive and weigh a ton.

It weighs 1.6 kilo, is big and costs more than 2000 dollars. That's a f/3.5-f/5.6 lens. Imagine it to be f/2.8 troughout. You can add a zero to each figure above.

Just imagine if you will the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 lens it already has a 105mm filter size. And the cost of doing good glass with zoom and great IQ would make most people unable to afford it. THe weight would also be a factor.

If you're thinking of the one I'm thinking of, its "only" 300-800 f/5.6. Actually, that's probably a pretty good lens, its less than a 3x multiple. The Bigma (50-500) is 10x, and the 18-200 is 11x and Tamron (I think its them) announced an 18-250! |

Wat i get from u'r comments, is that physical limitations would be a major factor working against a full range lens.
Followed by an unappealing price tag |
