How do you know if the Rebel XT kit lens is a USM lens. I see four different versions on this site, with two being marked as USM. I have the "EF-S 18-55mm II" version and it does not state anywhere on the body that it has USM. As I read reviews and other things, I keep coming across references that the Rebel XT and 20D kit lenses are the USM model. I have seen many pictures of Canon lenses and all the USM models usually state it on the body. I do have to admit that it is my quietest focusing lens (the Sigma is very loud and the 50mm is slightly louder). One of the reasons I ask is that I plan on selling it on eBay soon and the USM models go for a bit more. Hey I want to get the most I can out of this lens.
- Does anyone have a EF-S 18-55mm that states USM on it?
- Is yours louder or quieter than the Canon 50mm f/1.8?
As a note to all those folks that believe the kit lens is worth buying (I used to fall into that category), get a body only, buy the 50mm, and save for a better lens.
Edit: So I got bored and started to search the best place to find real photos of equipment, eBay. After looking through some 100 auctions that state USM in the title, I finally found a real one.
Picture
- Does anyone have one of these?

| If it's a USM version then it'd have the yellow band around the end. |

| It says USM on the ring around the lense and is stamped in red right next to the glass on the front. You can see it in the picture you posted. |

That is what I thought and the picture shows that. But what about the references I've seen to the kits coming with the USM lens? Is there a chance that the kit lenses are USM and are just not marked? So here is another question
- When you turn the focus ring with AF engaged, what does it feel like? I mean does it sound like a non-USM motor?
One thing that confuses me, why does Canon ship the same kit lens with both the XT and 30D? It seems weird that they would ship such a low end lens with a $1500 camera.

Kit lenses for the japanese market are USM lenses. The ones for the US and europe are not. And if the lens is a USM lens, you can bet that it will be marked that way. Canon is not going to put something into a lens and not show it off.

If it came with the camera, it's not USM.
