I hope this is not threadjacking, but my discussion seems to fit in.
I was enamored with the D80 when I saw it in the store a few weeks ago. Particularly since I have been interested in the 18-200 VR lens since it came out. So much so, a couple of weeks ago, I placed an order for one to get me on a waiting list!
And I've been told my 18-200 VR just shipped.
Now I have a little problem. I still don't have a Nikon! I am thinking of going with D80 because I will probably keep my Canon for a while and carry both cameras around, the Canon with my 10-22 and the Nikon with the 18-200. I don't want too much weight so a lighter body is an advantage.
However, eventually, I might go all Nikon, if I buy a suitable replacement for my 10-22 and 70-300 IS DO (that one I might sell earlier, but then I wouldn't have any lenses with real "reach".
I realized after ordering the lens how expensive it's going to be to switch though. Besides having to sell and rebuy lenses, I'd need to buy a new flash system, new flash accessories (e.g., Lightsphere journalist) and I have Canon extension tubes I would need to change.
Any advice from people on gearing up? Best third party battery for the D80? Good, inexpensive and sufficiently fast SD card? Wireless remote? Is there an eyecup -- to block stray light -- available for the Nikon (I always have trouble with that on my Canon, and you can't find an eyecup.) I don't use flash much if I can help it--the lower end flash with the bounceable head ok?
I have "committment" jitters already though. I am impressed with what I read about the Pentax K10D. Viewfinder is supposed to be as good as Nikons or better, it's weather sealed, good performance, small footprint, and most importantly to me, built in VR. I don't have thousands to spend on lenses so I think built-in VR might be the best route for me. (My theory with the Nikon 18-200 is that maybe I can live with just that and the wide angle lens.) I looked at the Sony alpha for that reason, but was not impressed, and that's when I decided on the Nikon. But the Pentax looks pretty good! Any of you look at the new 10D and can offer your thoughts comparing it to the Nikon and Nikon lens family?
