So I get up at 4:45 am this morning to go take some shots in the dark.
Had it all planned. Camera ready, extra batteries charged up, gas in the car.
It was cold and dark out as I headed down the road.
There was a observation hill I was heading to were you could get a good view of the local powerplant.
It was only about 8 miles away so it did not take me long to get there.
I come up on the road only to see a sign that read's "authorized vehicles only".
Hmm, must be the wrong road I think to myself.
It is darn dark out here and a few of the roads are off limits.
So I drive up to the next road. Same type of sign, "authorized vehicles only".
I look back from the direction I come from and I can see the hill now.
So I go back to the first road as I know that is it. I drive past the sign thinking it must have alway's been there and I just never seen it before. I know about 1/8 mile up the road turns to go up the hill.
So I drive up the road and were I need to turn there are closed gates across the road with a big "STOP" sign.
Great, all this planning and I can't get up the hill I wanted to take the photo's from.
The road has alway's been open before and I have been up there many times.
Not sure what the deal is today with the gates. Must be something they don't want me to take photos of, lol..
So anyway I end up spending a half hour or so driving around the powerplant to find another spot.
There is a ethanol plant right next to the powerplant and I ended up taking photos of that instead.
I took many and feel this is one of the better ones.
Would love to hear your thoughts on it.
What should I have done different?
What don't you like about the photo?

It's probably private property and the owner is just protecting himself from lawsuits from people trespassing. If you know how to locate the property on a map you might be able to find the owner by working with the register of deeds at the county courthouse. Contact the owner and ask permission to shoot at the location. If you carry a nice print of your work to give to the owner this might grease the wheels. You might even find this same owner has other property with better views. This assumes the owner is not corporate and not the operator of the plant in question. I doubt you'll get permission from them. With todays "scared sh*tless to death" mentality after 911, everyone with a camera is considered a terrorist. I like the photo and would only suggest different perspectives with different length lenses if possible. I'm assuming you used a tripod or car window mount.

The property owners probably got tired of chasing off crowds of camera toting terrorists, so they put up the gates and signs knowing that all good terrorists follow rules and regulations to-the-letter and this would definitely keep them from getting photographs of such a high-priority target.
As for the photo, what do you think about it?

The hill in on the powerplants land. They use to have a sign off the main road that said something like "Powerplant observation hill" and a arrow pointing you the direction to go. There was a parking area on top the hill with trash cans and other signs telling about the plant.
I will have to do some asking around to see what is going on.
I know that they are starting construction of a second plant and maybe that has something to do with it.

I love the shot :) I only have one TINY TINY nitpick. After studying it a bit my eye finally picked up something faint in the middle. I decided it was a crane, and for some reason (sheer perversity?) I keep going back to it, trying to see more detail. Since it's not integral, maybe removal?
This kind of picture always brings conflicting feelings. It's beautiful, otherworldly almost, but part of me feels I should hate it as a symbol of industrial greed and destruction. Yet it's a necessary part of the life we all accept and want. And yet... and around and around it goes... But nothing changes the fact that it's a beautiful photo! |

I also kept seeing the crane.
Removal of it was never a thought of mine, but it should have been.
Very good idea.
Going to give that a try.
Thanks! |
