If I use the dodge/burn tool to selectively make the background around my subject pure white/black, is that legal under advanced editing or does that fall under
You may not:
-use ANY editing tool to move, remove or duplicate any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer̢۪s description of the photograph (aside from color or crop), even if the tool is otherwise legal, and regardless of whether you intended the change when the photograph was taken. |

I believe you answered your own question.
IMO that would break the rule

Mostly illegal. If the background contained information the majority of the SC considered significant it would be DQed.
Here is an example.
In this image KDO removed the background (an entire living room) and was DQed for it.
Of course, an entire livingroom and the detail in your background may not be comparable, but it would still put you on shaky ground should validation be requested.

If all you are doing is changing color for example, shades of blue to pure white that should be fine. Here's a shot that did that and also removed some clouds and was validated:
->
ETA: Not my pic.

Since each photo is different and we can't view yours it's best to just contact the SC and get a direct answer. Just use the contact form under the help menu. |

Very interesting. So it would appear that the DQ would depend on which SC voted on the pic. Because this one obviously would fail the test. Very interesting indeed. I was a little worried about one of mine. Of course it didn't do so well so validation never came up. After seeing this one I feel better about mine.

I posted that one because it said in the photographer comments it went throught the validation process.

Depends on the rule set. Basic it would be illegal. Under advanced it would be okay (I think?)
*edit* Depending how much you had to remove to get the effect. If the background is mostly dark anyways and you just bump up the contrast and then clone out any "not so black" areas I think it would be cool

So is it ok to show the SC the pic, even though I might enter it in a challenge? |
