| I'm interested in a flash unit for my G3. I've been told to get the Canon Speedlite 420. However, I don't know if I realy 'need' to spend the money on that one, being just a beginner. I'm just wondering if anyone could suggest a cheaper alternative to the Canon 420. |

They also have the 220EX, but it is auto-only and the head doesn't swivel or tilt so you can bounce. If I were going to buy an accessory flash, I'd probably bit the bullet and go with the 420 and the off camera cable.
I've heard warnings about using 3rd party flash units, that they can damage the circuitry inside the camera itself, but I don't know if there is any truth to that.
