The practical side, in a nutshell:
- Take several exposures
- Open the first in PS
- Open the second, place on a layer above the first, and set the opacity to 50%
- Tweak the registration so it is aligned with the first image
- Repeat this process with subsequent images, turning visibility off for all but the first and current images.
- Now everything is aligned. Turn all the layers back on, and set layer opacity as follows (Layer 1 is at bottom:
Layer 1, 100% (1/1)
Layer 2, 50% (1/2)
Layer 3, 33% (1/3)
Layer 4: 25% (1/4)
And so on. For each four images stacked, random noise is reduced to 50% of its original value.

Could you elaborate on how to "Tweak the registration"? This is something I have not tried yet. Also, if your original photos have a lot of noise in them, I am assuming you do NOT use any form of noise reduction on them before stacking, or should you???

Thanks!

I'll assume we're talking about a night sky, with some stars. You want the stars to line up. But the stars move in the frame. So you keep the exposure short enough to minimize any trailing (<30s or so for a 16mm lens on an APS-C camera) and when you stack them up, you need to nudge one layer one direction or another, and sometimes (most times) rotate slightly to make sure all the stars are aligned. There are software packages that do this automatically. You can do it in PS by selecting the "move" tool and using the arrow keys to align. That's the reason for setting opacity to 50%, so you can see the alignment.
Remember that if you include part of the landscape, that will *not* move, and so you will need to process the sky separately. It can be quite a job, especially when the land/sky interface is complicated.
All in all, this is a rather involved technique, requiring knowledge and skill. Don't be put off though. Go out and experiment. The results can be very well worth it.

i'm going to try. sometimes, i shy away from new things so my score won't suffer, but this site is to learn. we shall see :) don't be scared, do research...that's what this site's about. good luck everyone. i hope to see a lot of entries into this. should be an extremely interesting challenge.

As literal as this crowd is, I wonder if what I've been working on for the last 3 hours will suit them. It's 3 images melded together with layers, filters, etc. I love it but do you think stars and clouds are all people want???

I dont think so... When I first read the challenge I tought about a cloud-less day... Didnt think of clouds-stars-moons until I read this thread...And actually I would love to see something more "original" being an experts challenge...

edit to ad... &%/& I just had a great idea and mexican sky will not help me with it... :( I think I`ll have to pass on this...*cry*

So, was the skiff in the original photo or was it added as part of a composite? ...:-P teehee

Certainly that can be used to your advantage, don't you think. Sunsets/sunrises must be rather interesting around there.

Shanghai has some very interesting lighting at night, when the city lights hits the more than occasional smog ... but sunrise/sunset ... the sun cannot always be seen :-(

We have entered a skiff-free zone until the spring thaw :-) I would not be so artificial as to insert an imagined skiff into winter's reality. What do you think I AM, anyway? jejejeĆ¢„Ā¢
