Just looking at B&H for remote switch. They list 2 I would consider for the Rebel XT: 2ft Standard and 16' wireless. Anybody got any pros and cons of these? |

I have the RC-1 and love it.
It operates at ranges up to 16.4 ft./5m, and may be set for either instant shutter release or 2-sec. delay.
It may also be used to activate mirror lock and bulb shutter function.
This is a sore subject with 20D/30D owners, may be other models too - no infrared remotes without buying a transmitter & receiver.
"Soccer-Mom" dSLR's can have advantges....

I have both the Canon RC1 wireless remote and a el-cheapo wired one I got off eBay. I can't seem to find the eBay model again or I would post it, but it works great. I started off by using the wired one for most all shots taken while on a tripod. Then I started using my wireless remote and haven't touched my wired one since.
For $18 on Amazon, pick up the wireless one and be done. If you find yourself wanting the wired model later, you can buy one.

I have both the RC1 wireless and the wired one too. I primarily use the wireless one (don't get the RC5), but I do use the wired one for long exposures and when using bulb mode. I got them both at Amazon, the wireless for $18 and the wired for $23 or something like that.

Thanks. Now all I have to do is point my husband in the right direction and practice looking surprised for when I open it at Christmas! |

The wired one is nice because you don't have to concern yourself about being in the line of sight as is required by the IR remote. The IR remote receiver is situated on the front of the camera. If only they had the sense to put one on the back as well. |

The Pentax IR remote works from the back. Have you tried you Canon from the back? |

It doesn't work from the back.
OP, there is 2 wireless remotes for the XT. The first one is the RC-1 and is the remote you should get. The second is the RC-5 and its not as good but is approx. $5 cheaper. |

I bought an el-cheapo no name brand wireless remote from Hong Kong on eBay for about AU$20. It works on both Nikon and Canon. It came with a little mirror you attach to the camera to reflect the spray of remotes onto the sensor when you are behind the camera and the remote has a little LED light which comes in handy in the dark.
Also have the canon wired one, both very handy. |

I have the RC1 as well. Is your battery good? Mine works flawlessly. Also, you should leave your AF on. The camera will focus and then take the picture. I always use it on AF unless I am shooting a landscape or night shot.

The only thing you have to do to use the RC1 is put the camera in self timer mode and then point the remote at the front of the right side grip. Make sure you point the end opposite the red switch at the camera, the end with the ir led.
edit: Also I just remembered that I can't get my remote to work in 10 sec mode (switch on "L" on remote). It just does nothing. But it works great in 2sec (switch on "2") or instant mode (switch on dot).

Yea, if I want a wireless remote for my camera it cost something like $600 or $300 for a wired one plus 100ft of cord.

If you don't mind using a remote with a cable I would shop around on EBAY. I got mine from Hong Kong too for about £6. Although it feels a little flimsy it has always worked well and at just £6 I guess I am happy to put up with a cheap feel.
