I am not a Canon guy but I don't think the 10D can use CF cards bigger than 2GIG. Can a Canon person confirm this?

From what I'm reading 10d can use greater than 2gb cards. It reads fat32. Reformat the card in your camera rather than your pc.

i cant reformat in the camera as it just comes up with the EOS, then PA-A and then goes right to the error 02.

If you are running the latest firmware then the card is probably bad. It happens.

how can i check to see if i am running the latest firmware? thanks for your help.

the 10D runs older 'dos' or the embedded version can't read a card that big.
I think the limit is 2Gb (it may be 4Gb - but I think the 20D could do 4gb and the 10D only 2gb).

There is no firmware fix for this.

Hmm what I read said the camera formats in fat32 so it could read greater than 2gb cards. Dunno.

A quick search over on DPReview confirms that the 10D does in fact fomat in FAT32 (I thought I remembered it did) and that others have been using 4GB microdrives in the 10D successfully. I did not see posts about 8GB microdrives, but FAT32 should imply compatibility.
Question is, can you successfully format, write to and read from the drive when it is in a card reader? That would at least indicate whether or not the drive is functional.

ok i have the latest firmware 2.0.1. i did format it with a card reader successfully.
i havent tried to read or write to the drive in the card reader. i will try that next. thanks

I don't know about them all, but my 10D handles my 4 Gb CF card quite nicely.
