Hi,

Do you vote higher for say a Landscape shot compared to a Sports shot ? Or do you vote on how well the picture was taken ? Just curious.

thanks !

There's no "theme", so subject matter is really a non-issue (i.e. - DNMC isn't a factor).

Vote how you like. Do you like the photo? Is it technically sound? Is it something you might consider framing and displaying in your home? Did it make you say "Hey, that's cool ", or did it make you wonder what they were thinking in entering the shot in the first place?

No real right or wrong. Be yourself and vote as you see fit.

Have fun! :D

I vote highest on the images that "move" me the most, and are technically accomplished. Landscapes (really good landscapes) move me a lot, so I give a lot of high scores to landscapes in free studies. But I don't downgrade anything for not being a landscape, see? I'm perfectly willing to give very high scores to ANY very fine image that strikes my fancy.

This image was one of my favorites in Free Study XIV:

I like to look at portraiture the most, so maybe I score it a bit higher. On the other hand I could be more critical about it because I focus more on it so it could score lower.
When I look at my vote distribution for the challenge that ends tomorrow there is a slight bias towards portraits. But among my highest scores there is a bit of everything.

For some reason that first sentence just really makes me want to go through the next free study and tag a bunch with "Clearly Does Not Meet Challenge." "Did you read the challenge description." Just to watch the threads pop up.

How do I vote- its pretty random really....I have an 12 sided die and just roll. Anything that comes up 11 or 12 gets a comment and a 10.- just kidding.

I like to think that I am pretty even handed when it comes to different subjects. Although your post did make me wonder since I shoot primarily landscape if there isn't some sort of subconcious trend to vote landscapes higher than other subjects.

If you don't mind me asking how did that photo "move" you? I can see it's technical appeal but for me it has no emotional appeal what so ever. I didn't vote but had I did it would have still gotten a good score because I can appreciate it's overall quality.

You're better off with two six-sided dice. That way you will have a nice curve that peaks on 7 and you will pass all the troll tests.

This Free Study is getting lots of 7+ votes from me. I tend not to vote landscapes as high. It's not that I don't like landscapes, but they have to work hard to impress me. Generally, I tend not to like photos that fall into any category. I like category-free photography. There are exceptions: candids, for example, because that category is not as restrictive. I also like photos that are anti-category, that defy your expectations of whatever category it's in. Unlike challenges, though, a Free Study has to establish what it is and THEN defy it.

If you look at it out of the corner of your eye or like you look at those weird 3-dimensional pics, it starts to move. Or I'm having flashbacks again.

Nope. I asked someone else to try it. It moves. :)

Asking the same person you're tripping with, doesn't count. :P
