I love to be there, but I will be with my husband in Sydney, due to his treatment but please keep me informed as I may be able to fly down for a couple of days during that time.

We will be expecting our first grandchild in late January, so hope to be in Meblourne some time after that.

thats correct Tim :) just deciding on which day Nick will be ok with I guess. I think it is either a Wednesday or Thursday.
How about the new wildlife park in Sydney? I am really open to suggestions. I could only do daytime tho.

I seem to be confused as I have now re read this thread, and the get together could be in Sydney between the 21st and the 29th February, is that right.....

That suits me, as I will be in Sydney that week for sure, and it will actually be a rest time for Peter re his treatment.

This means it looks like I will be able to make it.....

Please keep me informed if any thing becomes concrete, or changes, as I don't want to miss this if possible, as I will be there.

Peter must come first, but the date you are talking about, would really suit me..... please, re Sydney..... thanks.....

I live in Melbourne and like a good Pinot - some good wineries out my way (outer eastern suburbs)...

I've been a bit slack replying to emails but yes I'm up for the Sydney meet if it happens and will take the day off work if need be.
Sherpet: Shez will still catch up with you and Pete no matter what :)
Doctornick: Nick same gos for you, will definitely see you
Guroos: Mike I'll PM you in the newyear, my tips aren't worth lunch but we can still get together and talk photography and fire off a few shots and try out my new cokin filter set :)

This sounds good to me too. Should we break this GTG to a fresh thread?

Even though we have a tough journey ahead with Peter, I am just so excited with the thought of meeting some of my DPC friends with this journey to Sydney and also Melbourne.

After Xmas I will start a thread, to check with who I can meet up with when in Sydney, and also Melbourne. I so look forward to meeting as many as I can, as I love you all.

Cool I saw your post just before heading off to bed... so just thought I'd say hi.

My wife and I would be happy to show you some of the wineries out our way one weekend and I may well have time during the week for some other excursion ;-)

Uluru - I haven't been there yet. The problem is that while the Rock is great its in the middle of the desert and there is nothing else to see nearby, so it works out as quite a bit of time and money for one attraction.

Tasmania is great if you love wilderness. You can fly or go by boat. The ferry is pretty well equipped (2 resturantsm bar etc) but the crossing is notoriously rough. When we went I took my car on the boat and my wife flew despite this meaning over an extra hours travel at each end to give you an idea...

On the other hand there is plenty of nice scenery in Victoria, quite similar to Tassie if you go to the right places. I live in suburbia approximately 25km from the CBD (Melb is wiiiiide) and the Dandenong mountains are 5 mins from me - a nice way to see some Aussie bush without travelling too far.

The webjet website metioned earlier is a good place to find cheap flights - although you can ususally save another $10 or so per ticket by booking the flights you see there directly on the airline's webpage ;-)

You may also be able to get some Oz flights included in your international fare - this is what my wife and I did when we visited Canada (round the world tickets can be great)

If you are going to drive (which I'd recommend) then the coast is lovely all the way from Adelaide thru Melb to Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns. A large chunk of the Melb-Adelaide route is known as the Great Ocean Road which is famous for its scenic views of the ocean and cliffs (not many beaches though). The Otway Mountains are at the Melb end and provide some wilder bush if thats your thing... Towards the other end is The Grampians - lovely rocky mountains, lots of great bushwalks although they are inland, not on the coast.

Rough distances:
Adelaide - Melb 900km
Meb-Sydney 1000km
Sydney-Brisbane 1000km
Brisbane-Cairns 2000km

You'd have to choose - tricky as its all nice ;-)

Weather : Feb is the hottest month, BUT Melb is famous for having four seasons in one day. One day will be 40 degrees C (104f) and literally the next 20 degrees C (65f) and stormy.... or the change can come through half way through the day. Most days are a comfortable 25 or so but its a good idea to have a warm jacket in the car no matter what the forecast.

Hope all this helps

It always seems that way... although the fires are huge the bush is even bigger and there is always plenty to see. I visited the Grampians 6 months after their big fires and while some areas will remain closed for a long time others are completely untouched and I found the regrowth in the partly damaged areas very interesting...

I haven't read this post, so this might be repeating something - when it comes to prices.... remember the aussie dollar is pretty strong at the moment but it's still only 0.75-0.8 US dollars.

Also, I can't remember from my north american travels whether the GST is included in prices in the US or whether (like canada) it's not on the price tag but added on when you get to the cashier - but in Australia it's always included in the price.

When it comes to restaurants and meal prices, you might want to note that in Australia tipping is not required. Hospitality wages here are considerably higher than in North America, so you needn't feel bad about not tipping either. There's a fifteen percent saving right there :P.

Melbourne is a great city, and you'll have a blast.

Yes pretty much right - although a small tip for good service is appreciated if the service is bad most Aussies won't tip.

I lived in Canada for 6 months and found the cost of living pretty similar to here in Oz. I imagine that with the srtonger US dollar thinge will be affordable for Americans. Some things like petrol are more, but others like alcohol are cheaper - evens out in the end ;-)
