Looks like a mirror or possibly one of the DO lenses where I have seen similar results in some cases. What was the lens & settings? |

it was F4.2 250mm (35mm equivalent) on a fixed Fujinon lens, the Finepix camera. So it's a mirror lens? :( |

Crayon, If it's a fixed lens camera, point and shoot type, it could be fog on the lens, you take the camera out of a cooler place into a warm place with higher humidity this sometimes will happen.
Also, I had a handicam that would focus on anything that was on the UV filter on the lens sometimes, so check to see if the lens is clean.
Does it shoot like that all the time, or is this just a small part of a larger picture, or full frame? |

Robs, What's a DO stand for? Donut? Sorry, couldn't help that it just jumped in there. Actually I have no idea what DO lens is, but I shoot some with a 500 f8 Celestron, and that's what it looks like in the out of focus areas. Fill me in on the DO lens please? |

That is just a part of a larger photo. Obviously this OOF portion was intentional as I created a blur background with a sharp subject in front using long focal lengths. So that is a BOKEH, right? And it looks like donuts. Dang... |

DO is Canon's Diffractive Optics Technology. I wouldn't expect this kind of bokeh from that kind of lens.
It's also clear it is not a mirror lens, though it kinda has that general look. The white spot in the very center gives it away.
Given that we know it's a lens on a P&S, by guess is that there is something in the optical system that is causing it... or, there was something between the OOF background and the camera that was acting like a pinhole. Most likely something in the optical system. |

Interesting - so the lens may not be crap after all? I'll find a few more similar shots (blur BG) and see if I can spot them. Thanks
