I felt the need to switch to raw instead of .jpg's in my *ist DS. I can open the .pef(raw) image in Corel PSP X but when I had a Panasonic that used Raw (.raf) it seemed different to edit than the pentax file.

So I just edit it normally like I would a .jpg but I should have greater control over certian things correct? ie like exposure with tungsten lights ect ect.

Any direction or guidance is appreciated.

I've never used PSP X.. so I have no idea what the RAW editor for it allows..

If I were you, I'd grab a copy of this:

RawShooter Essentials

Great little program, and it's free.

I agree with Artyste, RSE makes fixing white balance issues easy. I have PSP X but I would have no idea how to fix white balance issue as quickly or easily as RSE.

Yeah probrably more of what I shoul duse. When I had a Fuji I had to use their propietary software to edit the raw files. I will give Raw Shooter Essentials a try. Can't hurt thats for sure.

Also on a side note on the new K10D since it has the larger image processor, while shooting in .pef and .dng would you need 4gb cards? Right now with the *ist DS and a 1gig sd cards I get 90 on .pef's and 330+ on .jpg's. Just was out of curiosity.

Yah, the K10D has larger RAW files. I dunno about 4gb cards (still rather expensive I think), but you'll definitely need *more* cards.

Or get yourself a good P-2000 or similar card-reading storage device.

*HOWEVER*.. RawShooter Essentials may not be compatible with K10D Raw images (and they've stopped adding new support as Lightroom 1.0 is coming out soon). So if you're getting a K10D, keep that in mind.

Yeah I have a 40gig laptop hard drive image storer only. So that would probrably be more than enough for what I want and will be able to do.

As much As I think I would like a K10D its probrably not for me right now. Can barely handle what I have as it is.

It's true - RAW Shooter Essential doesn't read the K10D's PEF files, neither does Irfanview (yet). I haven't tried PNG yet.
So the only way so far to edit the PEFs is to use the proprietary software...

I know this is an old thread but it seems to fit what I'm wondering exactly - and time has passed so maybe a solution has been found?

Is there a way to use RawShooter Essentials with Pentax K10D/K100D? At the moment my copy of RSE 2006 doesn't recognise the PEF or DNG files coming out of my K10D.

If not, what RAW processing software would you recommend to someone who loves RSE?

Man, when I opened this thread, for a second I thought "Artyste is back!!" and then I realised how old it was..

Sorry, dont use RSE. Cant help there.

This thread should help.

Since I bought RawShooter Essentials before Adobe bought the program they offered me a free copy of Lightroom when it was released. I'm getting use to Lightroom but RSE was still easier to use.
