A friend of mine wants to get his wife a new lens for her Nikon D70 for Christmas. Anyone feel like giving some suggestions on closeup lenses, as well as long distance ones? Any help is appreciated, thanks!!

What lenses does she have already? What kind of pictures does she take? What's your friend's budget?

Well budget is a very important factor, you can go from a $100 lens to an $8000 lens. Also what lenses does she already have?

I 'll get this started.....

For macro, you can't really go wrong with any of them. It really depends on how much you want to spend. Lenses around 50mm (Sigma) or 60mm (Nikon) have very small working distance. Next up is the Sigma 70mm, the Tamron 90mm, Sigma 105mm and Nikon 105mm. As I said, it's a question of budget and working distance.

For long range, the Nikon 55-200 is cheap and ok for the price. For more reach, I recommend the Sigma 70-300 APO DG. Very cheap and good allround. It also has 1:2 macro@300mm, although it's usefulness is limited due to the very small depth of field due to focal length. Many versions of this lens around, the best one is the APO version (with the red stripe).

Hope this helps

Maybe a gift card from B&H would be the best...

He couldn't remember what lens it was that she already had, it was whatever came with it when she got it. He was thinking along the lines of a macro lens or something along those lines. Price I would guess lower to mid budget, probably $1000 tops is what I'm going to say just for a general idea.

Thanks for the help, I'll give him these, should be pretty helpful for him. He doesn't know anything about cameras but knows she loves it.

Thanks guys, any other suggestions would be great too! :)

If $1000 is tops, this would be my choice. Though macro magnification is only 1:3.5.

Extension tube too? That's the lens I thought of right off also, nearly as sharp as the Nikon/Canon versions too.

ed - Extension tube set
