So seeing the ridiculous amount of cool pictures people take with wide angle lenses has made me super jealous and I've decided that the time to purchase a wide angle is nowwww! Currently I have the classic Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II and the Tamron SP AF 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 AD Aspherical IF. I was thinking something around the 10-20mm range.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM looks really good, but am I correct in thinking that when I purchase a new camera in a few years this lens won't fit? Maybe not the best decision then.

Well, the equivalent lens seems like the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM. Would this be my best option?

Here are the DPC links to both:

//www.dpchallenge.com/lens.php?LENS_ID=1193
Editted to correct the second link

Thanks!

The 10-22 EF-S will only "not fit" if you go for a full frame sensor camera when you upgrade. Chances are this would mean the 5D or 1dsMKII or their successors. With any other EOS you'd be fine.

Makes me a little nervous that there's only been 1 picture entered with the Sigma lens

I think you're missing a more popular 10-20 lens. It's a Sigma but has some extra letters in its title. Here's a linky:
Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for Canon

You'll see one of my recent shots in fifth spot for the lens. My shot only has a little bit cropped off on the right side, so it's a pretty decent example of the cool distortion you get at the 10mm end of the lens. Keep your F-stop at 8 or higher and the focus is pretty good across the entire field of view.

I have no idea about what it fits or not, except that it fits my camera. I sort of walked into Henry's one day to look around and somehow ended up walking out with this lens. ;-)

Hmmm, now that I look at it, I think maybe DPC made a typo on your second lens link?

That link Slippy? That lens is for a Sigma, not a Canon. I'm guessing Nerdy just posted the wrong one...

They also wont work with any 1.3x crop factor camera such as the 1d, 1DMKII, 1DMKIIn, just point out that its not just FF cameras that it wont fit.

You might want to check if the sigma will also fit. It was my understanding that they were following the EF-S mount, not the EF, which fits all EOS models.

The Sigma DG mimic EF, the DC mimic EF-S. Again, you'd want to double check that.

The Sigma lenses all use the EF mount, that means they will mount on any EOS camera. The problem is that the lenses designed for the APS-C sensor have a smaller image circle and will produce vignetting with larger sensors, though usually only at the short end of the zoom range.

If you want a lens wider than 14mm that will cover full frame, currently, the Sigma 12-24 is the only one I know of that will provide such coverage without resorting to a fisheye.

I think the Canon 10-22 is an awesome lens...one of the lenses I use the most. You are not planning on buying a new camera for a few years so if you get this lens now, you will have gotten tons and tons of use out of it. I don't think it is a waste to buy it. You will get your money's worth. And you will LOVE IT!

When you get a FF camera, then I'd get the Canon 17-40.

It is just really hard to beat the Canon 10-22. I'll probably never buy 3rd party lenses ever again.

nobody mentioned the Tokina 12-24 f4 before...
i ordered it last week, so i can't tell you about my personal experiences, because it's still on its way.
but i know, it has a better resolution and contrast then the sigma 12-24/10-20 and a similar one as the canon 10-20.

take a look here (it's a german page, but the pictures should tell you enough...):

sorry about posting the wrong link! fixed that

is the Canon worth the extra money for a poor college student like myself?

Thanks for the responses everyone!

Of course, you can eat ramen noodles and spend your financial aid money on lenses.

Searching around some more I found some lens reviews. Just looking at the sharpness in them it seems like Sigma is easily comparable to the Canon lens. I don't know much about what these numbers mean specifically or anything though.

Canon: //photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/canon_1022_3545/index.htm
Sigma: //photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/sigma_1020_456/index.htm

Does this mean that the Sigma is comparable?

From what i have read they are both excellent lenses.
I will be buying the sigma 10-20 in the next few days :)
