I bought a Quantaray MS-1 Flash booster for use with my S9100, and there's something curious going on.
I'm using the camera in manual mode with an aperture of 2.8, ISO 80, and Shutter Speed of 1/60. With this configuration with only the internal flash the shots come out quite well exposed, but when using the MS-1 along with the internal flash the resulting pictures are unusually dark.
What can be causing this?

You are using your built-in flash? If your camera does a pre-flash to determine exposure, it's probably triggering the slave at that point and making an incorrect exposure determination. The camera expects the light from the Quantary to be there, but in fact, it has already fired.

There are slave flashes that understand the pre-flash. Unfortunately, this isn't one of them.

Hi Nobody, thanks for answering. You're absolutely right, the camera does a preflash, and I wasn't aware of it. I thought that the only pre flash was for red eye, but I was wrong.
Nevertheless, I found out that if I turn on the external flash feature on the S9100's menu with the internal flash active, it will fire a single faint flash thus firing the MS-1 in synch.
