In any large group of people, a certain number are expected to die within a certain time period -- that is what the insurance industry is based on (actuarial tables).

Problem here is that a statistically larger number of test subjects (those taking the experimental drug) died than in the control group, or than would have been predicted by statistical averages.

Yup.
Actually as much as I hate pharma companies (this was supposed to be a stunt that would extend the patent protection of Lipitor that expires in 2010 by adding another drug - torcetrapib - to be used in conjunction with Lipitor hence extending its patentability or something), I have to say that the actual statement from Pfizer did not use these words.
Their words were more in line of "study was coming along as expected".
The quoted statement was from WSJ, not from the company, although it can be easily deduced that way.
From the article, 82 people that took the combo drug died, compared to *only* 51 death when people only took Lipitor.

Someone here in the forums said it well: start exercising!
