So I just installed Vista for the first time. Anyone else out there played with it yet?

No huh, I guess those without MSDN subscriptions will have to wait until Jan 2007.

Here is a screen shot

Yea, I used it for a few weeks. But, to be honest, I just don't get it.

Unless I get it pre-installed on a new PC, then I can't see why I'd go to the trouble of upgrading from XP.

I've been using it for months, and installed the release version of Ultimate when it was released on MSDN in mid-November. Best OS ever. They really got it right. I've installed the business version as well on my workstation at work, and will be distributing it to all the desktops some time next week. Office 2007 is also the best version yet.

By the way, I was looking at your screenshot, and you appear to have a few things wrong with your computer: Firefox and WinAMP. ;)

You can change that flower thingie to something else, btw.

Since I have access to it for free, I decided to play with it and see how much has changed. Here are my thoughts thus far

Vista initially seems very different but you are loving the eye candy. Then you figure out where MS moved everything and how everything flows, and you start to see that it resembles XP in many ways. Then you kinda start to hate it because you have trouble doing even the simple things and you wonder why they made the choices they did. Then you use it for a whole day and you start to really like the speed and smoothness of everything. Damn it is smooth and fast. Then you go back to a XP machine and you kind of miss Vista.

That is what I learned today.

The version I installed today was the business version. What is Ultimate?

Firefox rocks period. And Winamp just works, no questions asked. I hate all these new music programs like iTunes and MP10. And maybe I like the flower :)

Check this out for a comparison of some of the many flavors of Vista.

Vista is new code. It's to Microsoft's credit that your experience is familiar, and that, to a greater or lesser degree for different people, you are able to pick up where you left off from XP.

The screenshots on Thurrott's site there are from Beta 2. Vista has changed a lot since then (though the images give the general look). I think this page at his site has more up-to-date information and a clearer breakdown.

That's the one I was trying to find the bookmark for. I need to come up with a better naming system.

I've got Ultimate, and I'm thinking about migrating my laptop to it, though Vista doesn't like my video card that much. (Laptop - GeForce FX5200 Go)

Once I build a new desktop (I haven't even owned one in four years+) it'll definitely be Vista.
