Okay, so I've gotta junky monitor. Emachines, in fact. Don't know the number right now, not at home.

Dang thing won't stay "on". The picture just blacks out. The power button stays blue instead of going orange like it does when the computer powers down. Turn monitor off, then back on, it comes on for a few seconds, goes back off.

Behavior is sporadic. We may crank it up tonight and have no trouble for two days. Then again, it may not work at all for two days. Been this way for about two weeks.

Main question - should I get a new monitor or is this POSSIBLY a video card problem? Monitor is okay other than this problem, only a year old, etc. Yes, I'm going to check on the warranty, but is it the monitor???

Flat screen LCD, 17", 1280x1024.

Try hooking up another monitor (borrow if you must). If it keeps doing it, it's most likely your card

I hooked up an old monitor that I don't completely trust. The behavior was not identical, but neither did it behave exactly correct.

I'm going to hook the monitor up to a laptop tonight and see if the monitor behaves.

Any other thoughts?

Is it the type of monitor with a removable power cable? If so try swapping cables. If not try a different outlet.

Don't have another cable of the same type. I have, however, already swapped outlets several times, and I've eliminated the surge protector and the actual monitor cable as the problem.

Other suggestions are welcome in case I've missed a bet.

Since you can't swap cables, make sure to physically and visually inspect the cable you are using. Specifically, make sure the pins on both ends are not loose, blackened or burned. Look for any places where the cable has seen abuse, feel along it for knots or loose spots where the wires may have become frayed or kinked under the skin.

Check the power cable in the same way.

Wiggle both while attached and operating (careful of the power cable) to see if they are loose. If there is a static-like sound the connection is loose. Move both cables around (one at a time) while watching the screen, the image should not changes.

---

Possible software problem: look to see if the computer is putting the monitor into stand-by (sleep). Some, mostly older, monitors will go to sleep but don't know how to wake back up. Is there a time pattern to the blacking out?

nard hooked the monitor up to the laptop 9that i am using and can't seem to find the shift key, backspace, or enter on0 and it did the same thing.\\

To clarify, I DID swap the monitor cable, but not the power cable. I'll give it a good once over for any problems. Might have gotten pinched, but I THINK it's okay.

My assumption was that yes, indeed, it was being put to sleep. If so, it's not totally consistent as to timing. Right now, it goes "to sleep" immediately, but sometimes it's a five minute thing, sometimes it's a 2 hour thing. Not always the same.

If Karmat ever gets her own laptop, it's gonna have to have a BIG keyboard, huh :)
