I thought there was a number of threads on this topic but i can't seem to find them in a search.
I have used Imatch from photools up until now but haven't been overly happy with it. It seems like a lot of the features are afterthoughts and are stuck into the program. That is to say it doesn't seem very user friendly. It has a ton of options mind you, so it does seem very powerful, just in an un-handy way.
anyone know of other options. I am thinking i need to start organizing my photos better. I am decently happy with how things are working right now and can find one image or a group of images amoungst the thousands in a few minutes, but if in a second wanted all the pictures of subject XX that was taken at different times it would take a while to get them.

Try searching on BreezeBrowser or Irfan View. |

have also found iview and of course aperature if you are on apple.
I wish adobe lightroom was more of a DAM, or even adobe bridge. So much software... so little asset management :S

I know this is a little silly, but I use the FREE Picasa2. I have about 17,000 photos that I haven't burnt to DVD and stored, and Picasa (now owned by Google, so you know they're into fast search) gets me through the process quickly. If you're just wanting to store and search your stuff, this is great and FREE. If you're looking for merchandising solutions, this isn't (yet) the best solution. |

Extensis' Portfolio is the programme for this stuff - but it's expensive, and not really going to do anything that Photools doesn't do.
The problem is not really the software - in that they're all deliberately over-spec'd - the problem is working out how you want to archive and retrieve all your stuff:
1. Which files do you want to catalogue? Every shot you take? Just the RAW files? Just the processed files? Every different variation of processed files? Different sizes of processed files?
2. Do you want to catalogue your friends and family shots along with your professional stuff, or have a separate database for that?
3. Images edited specifically for the web, like here for example - how do you track those separately from their originals, and how do you track where they are on-line?
4. Images you've sold/submitted: how are you going to keep track of that - likewise fofr prints and printing.
All the various softwares will do that - the difficult bit is just working out a structure for yourself.

yeah i looked a little at extensis portfolio and thought that iview was perhaps better for my needs. I saw a comparison and agree with what they said, that Portfolio was more geared towards businesses and multiple users, whereas iview was geared towards one photographer with a collection of photos.
