Ok, I've been holding back but having a hard time to continue. I want the Canon 5D now. What a great price, upto a $600 rebate with purchase of an extra cheap lens. So help me resist! There must be a replacement for the 5D probably Feb. Hummmmmm, increased MP, dust remover, brighter LCD, 5 fps ... oh my what else? Afterall, 30D replaced 20D with improvement and same basic price.
So someone help me to resist. |

Sorry mate. Can't help you. Go for it. Gotta reward yourself every so often and this seems like a good time for you. After all, Christmas is coming up. Why not buy yourself a nice present? |

There is always something new around the corner ... I waited a loooong time, even asked "When is the 400D out?" before the (non-us - non-japanese) name was revealed, a.k.a. the XTi. So, when the XTi was out, I did not hesitate! I took your 300D/Rebel, next was 350D, so I thought 400D would be a good guess. You are thinking what will be after 5D, is it worth waiting for? Since there is already a 10D (?), maybe it will be called 6D, let's see :-)
I for one am happy I waited, I am happy about the extra features I got, but it is easy to be content after one has endured the waiting. I know how you feel! But the 300D is not a bad camera, is it?
I would wait. But I am not you.
(Was this what you wanted to hear?)

I see no reason to resist. I don't expect any significant change in image quality out of the eventual "replacement" for the 5D; just more bells & whistles. If the camera is not currently lacking in any area of concern to you (which might conceivably be improved by the new model), then it's a really nice deal price-wise right now. Nice enough that you can probably recover most of your outlay selling the almost-new 5D if you do feel the upgrade is worth it.
In the meanwhile, there's a certain wild joy that comes from taking what you want when you want it, a feeling that can't be captured any other way. The cautious, sensible, plodder's path is too well-worn for the likes of you. Stay out on the edge where you belong, as long as you can :-)

Go ahead and splurge, and then donate your 20D to me :) Maybe you could use it as a tax write-off?
As for the name of the 5D successor ... why not ... wait here it comes ... 4D |

I think the post above should have talked you out of draging your feet, so what are you waiting for? :-)) |

The biggest mistake you've made toward the purchase of the 5D is asking a bunch of photographers to talk you out of it :-P
Much akin to posting on an autophiles site to try to talk you out of buying a lamborghini.

I'm not going to try and talk you out of it, sounds like a great idea - I'm trying to talk myself out of stealing my dads 5D next time I visit, usually I can take a few shirts/socks without him noticing but I'm pretty sure he would notice a missing camera and 3 L lenses.

You are just tormenting yourself by coming here. Its like having an AA meeting in a bar during happy hour. I am guessing you don't want to be talked out of it. =) |

Let's see... higher resolution, more dynamic range (details in highlights and shadows that the 20D can't resolve), lower noise, lens that work like they are supposed to (true wide angle, yeah!), and you get a $600 rebate too?!?
I'm guessing the only thing stopping you is that you're waiting for the store to open. Because if you were planning to purchase online, you'd have done it already. :-)

Let's see, I can only think of one reason not to buy the 5D...buy the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II, instead. :P |

How about a compromise? You buy it and I use it?

Ahhhh the thing is junk. Don't waste your money on it. It's heavy and the RAW files are too big. ;-P

You are much like me, in that we both try to live up to our usernames. ;-)
edit to add: I guess I could put Yanko in that category also. ;-P
