Well, I've dusted off a book that I read many years ago (when I was developing my own B&W film) and is very appropriate today with DSLRs. The book is called, "Learning to See Creatively" by Bryan Peterson, written in 1988. While the techniques and tips discussed by Bryan were really helpful back then, they are just as important today.

I read it again over the past day or two and what a nice refreshing look at the world of photography. The main takeaway that I remembered then (and now) is to view the world as if you were a lens (prime, telephoto, macro, whatever). I've learned to view subjects and landscapes as if I could dial any aperture in my mind. Seeing subjects with a DOF in mind really helps when composing images. This is just one aspect from his book.

At any rate, I noticed on Amazon that the author has an updated version of this book (in 2003). I haven't had a chance to read this newer version, but if it is anything like his original work, it should be a very influential book.

Has anyone else read either of these books?

Read 'em both. Highly recommend both just because there's different pictures.

All cloning controversy aside, he's still my favorite photog. Well, besides karmat :).

I just bought the 2003 edition on Amazon a few weeks ago. Read it cover to cover and it was very helpful in learning to see creatively. I also read his book Understanding Exposure and it was awesome. I read that one twice.

I haven't seen the 1988 edition, so I can't tell you what has changed, but it seems like the techniques should still be the same.

.

Searching my local library's online catalog, I see that the they stock the original book (and is checked out), but the newer one isn't even listed.
