Hi all I am one of the peas who came over a whil back ago.
I read a lot here and look at all the fantastic work ..
I need some help in getting a lens
Last week I Bought a Canon XTi with a 50 MM 1.8 Lens I did NOT get the kit lens, I do have a Canon rebel Film Camera and knew I could use my lens for my new camera
actually I guess I have a couple questions
1. I have a 3 or 4 year old Pro master 80 - 210 Zoom lens which I planned on using on my new camera . NOW it is possible I did not have correct settings But when I took Pics with it , they seemed kind of soft....
I switched out and used my 50 mm and they came out much more crisp
of course it is a brand new lens LOL ... any Ideas? I could give you a link to the photos if anyone would be willing to critique ...
they are @ 2 peas tho . im not sure of the rules here .,
2nd question
I will be taking a family group shot sat of a family of 9
like I said the lens I have plus the reg kit lens that came with my original film camera 28-80 lens (canon)
any ideas on these lens ? or could you recommend a good lens for family shoots ? maybe for 300 or under?
I have looked around reading up on lens BUT still not sure
I also have an external Flash it is a pro Master also, 5750 DX
on my film camera when I used it , it would not sync over 1/90 which I did NOT know about until quite a while after I bought it . My bad...
do I dare use it on My XTi? any Help would be so appreciated Thank You Nola

I would use your 50mm 1.8 for that family shoot. $300 is on the low end of the spectrum for lenses. Use your 50 until you can spend a bit more. Speaking from experience, if you buy lenses on teh cheaper side, they are suitable for a few months, but you quickly outgrow them as your eye improves. the cheaper lenses also don't hold their value so reselling is sometimes difficult or you just don't get much. On the other hand, you buy a L series lens for $1200, 8 months or a year down the road, you could resell it for $1100 granted its still in good shape. Something to think about. I constantly am buying and selling because I can't really afford the nice stuff, so I buy it with a "no payments for 6 months" type deal, use it and resell it. I end up spending a couple hundred to have a nice lens for a while.
That turned into a lengthy post. |

Thanks for the info..
so far the shots I have got with the 50 mm are great . I am just a worry wart
I like your way of getting lens hmm Have to think of that
and darn looks like I will be saving for a while if 300 is low and 1200 is
better ........ Thaks again Nola

You only saw the results of the promaster on prints before?
Now you are looking at something blown up to a big screensize.
On the other hand, the promaster is a cheap lens and compared to a 50mm prime it is horribly soft, even stopped down. On a 6x4 print you will notice it less, but on a screen or large prints it will show.

If you don't need a long lens the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is the perfect choice.....and it's only $350 before any rebates.
