So what is a voter to do?

Some of these beautiful shots have been destroyed by the text, or more to the point, the way the text was added.

I tend to want to vote on the entire presentation - especially if you make a mistake in your spelling and/or typing on your postcard - I want to really bash that.

Kerning no-nos abound - and many photographers seem to want to dominate the entire "card" with text that is as large as humanly possible. I'm dying to tally this into my score.

What do you think? Do we turn a blind eye to these issues since this is a photography site (after all we want to be better photogs, not designers), or do we vote the whole package on challenges like this?

I'm more for voting the whole package. This is how I see it. If business comes to you and asks you to put together a project for them (ie a postcard) and you take beautiful photography, but destroy it with with other stuff, are they going to use it anyway? Probably not, they will tell you to go fix it. It's the whole package...

on the other hand I've seen some great postcards in this challenge. I think it is one of the better challenges because it opens the door for creativity.

This challenge reminds me a little of the Jewelry Advertisement one last year.

I'm a graphics designer by day and the text issues really got to me too. I finally decided to vote on the image and give 'bonus points' for well done text; but not deduct points for badly done text... and some of it is awful. Some, however had such nicely done text that it improved the overall look of an okay image -- they got extra points.

If people tell you how to vote, eventually everyone would vote exactly the same on each photo and there would be no point in the competition. So just do what you feel is right.

I probably won't vote on "postcards", because I have an entry, but if I were to vote, then I'd probably look at what sort of postcard someone was going for when they put their text on it. I'd expect a comedy post card to probably have larger, more ridiculous looking, text, for example.

I am certainly voting for the entire package. A 5(ish) to those postcards I would look at in the racks and think, "hmm that's ok", a 7(ish) to those that I would buy to send, and a 10 to one I would keep on my mantlepiece or even frame. Some have lost scores for inappropriate or ugly lettering, others for large bare areas that would have benefitted from text. High scores have gone to cards both with and without text.

i don't think there's anything wrong w/ deducting a point or two for really bad text... and i don't think my text is great, either...

but do remember... very few of use know the "rules" of graphic design, so be gentle...

just make sure to give me my 10 or you don't get your check this week...

That reminds me, where is my check from last week? hmm, time for negative reinforcement of payment. ***goes to give 1 to all headwear challenge entries*** ;-)

I'm a graphic deigner, too and I vote on the layout as well as on the photo. An unpleasant font can destroy the whole image, as a good choice of fonts can save an average one, an excellent layout can bring out the best of a good image.
My highest rated Postcard has lots of text, but is graphically on a very high standard and the text really adds. I deduct points for bad typography and I comment on spelling mistakes as well (which brought me some angry PMs)

Edited for spelling ;-)

A 10 for Shane ... check! :)

I know that everyone isn't a graphics nerd, that's why I thought it wrong to score anyone based on lack of graphic skill. This IS a photography site, not a print shop. But again, some not only got it right -- they got it REALLY right!

Again, just my opinion.

For my voting so far I haven't been giving or taking away points for text...unless it takes away from the whole. As mentioned below, extra large text, illegible writing, colors that are horrid to look at got docked. In cases where the text wasn't nicely anti-aliases or if it was bland or not nicely placed I was entirely forgiving. In 99% of our challenges we AREN'T allowed to use text so in this one case where we are allowed I think a little flexibility is necessary. The things I am docking for I believe aren't limited to text. I think they are part of good art in general. (e.g. Balance, composition etc.).

I may go through my votes again because I docked a few images for NOT having text and thats not really fair. Again, we usually aren't allowed to use text and many are in that habit.

Two of the most stunning shots in the challenge (imo) are more or less ruined. On one the text is truly ugly, on the other it has been placed in a way that dominates the shot.
I vote for the whole thing. But I don't deduct heaps for text that I think is all wrong - minus 1 in most cases, 2 in a couple.
There are shots in the challenge that have too much text, as if the photographer wants to be sure we instantly know where it is at. Having google at our fingertips makes that unnecessary and it crowds the shots.
Less is more when it comes to postcards.

Edt to add: I tried to make a card that would make people want to visit the place and the comments I have gotten so far are saying just that - they would like to visit.

After I semi-retired as a photographer, I worked for a print shop and an embroidery shop doing graphic design for a few years, so I feel strongly about this too. I'm not deducting anything for people who did NOT add text, but I'm adding points for excellent text and deducting for lousy text. If you would have had an 8 from me, but you destroyed the presentation with (IMO of course) horrid text design, that's knocking you down a point or so. I'm definitely voting on the whole package here.

yeah? you basically said you didn't like my font in the comment you left on mine. actually, i'm not sure if you did or did not like it, since your grammer was horrible...

i mean.... really? is english your second language or something? i think you owe me an extra point... sort of a "poorly written comment penalty" or something... :)

(btw... believe it or not, but i was an english minor...)

ETA: oops... just noticed eyewave's in germany... english probably is a second language... i really should check these things before i post... moron = me

Plus, the challenge description does not require text, the special rule says "may add", not "must add", and MANY high-end postcards have no text anyway. So not adding text is definitely not grounds for any sort of deduction IMO.

Oooh! oooh! I think I've got a few points coming as I've gotten some really goofy comments before. Okay, so not on this site, just in life-in-general. Something about being naive and goofy-looking. Could never figure it out.

You've got the wrong guy. I actually don't think I've MADE any comments on this challenge yet anyway :-) Maybe one or two, not sure.
