My wife just agreed to let me spend $650 on a new lens. I'm replacing my 25-135 Canon lens, and would like to buy a wide angle zoom or quality wide angle prime if I can get it at or below this price. The one lens I have been considering is the Canon 17-40L lens, but I'm open to other brands. Does anyone have any advice on how I could get the best bang for my buck?

I bought the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 to replace my 28-135 Canon. It's a really great lens, especially for under $400. I wasn't worried about it not being wide enough, since I have the Sigma 12-24 which I highly recommend too. Both lenses will cover a full frame sensor.
I was surprised at how much brighter the f2.8 lens makes the finder. I don't think I would go back to an f4 lens for my main lens.

NOW I remember why I'm still single. Anyway, depends on how wide you really want to go. The Tamron 28-75 isn't superwide, but it's only around $350, Sigma 12-24 for $600, Sigma 15-30 for $415 (I love mine)and Sigma 10-20 for $500. All those I've mentioned have good reviews, so it would be up to you to decide how wide you would like to go.

All good recommendations, but keep in mind the Sigma 10-20 will vignette with a 5D |

yeah, you don't want to get any DC lenses. I think the Tokina 12-24 is probably a better lens anyways. But really, the 17-40L is better than anything mentioned, and is going to give the same angle coverage on your 5d that any of these would on our APS stuff.
On the 5d, the 28-75 is actually not to shabby on the wide end.

the 5D is a FF camera - the tokina 12-24 won't work folks. The sigma 12-24 will, but it's $650 or so.
the canon 17-40 is probably your best bet, but 17 is pretty wide on a 5D - this being FF 'normal' is 50mm, so anything smaller is indeed wide angle.
You say you're replacing the 28-135 - with what? Or is that the question? Your profile says you have the 70-200 f4 and 2 primes. what do you shoot and are you a prime lover? (i prefer zooms)
The 50 1.8 is fine for the price, but teh 1.4 is better by far, and with a 5D lenses make a difference. The tamron 28-75 2.8 is excellent, and I got mine used a few months ago for $275 (new $380 and there may be a rebate).
So you have $650 or 650 and what you can get for your 28-135?
The canon wide primes - 24, 35 are highly regarded. Not sure the price, but perhaps a tamron 28-75 and a prime, or the 15mm fisheye is nice.

| The 17-40L is a great lens. I realize that you have a full frame sensor, so it may be a bit wide. However, even though its an f4, the image quality is incredible and can rival that of most third-party primes. Just my opinion... |

| I've been very happy with my 17-40L. I was a little leary before I bought it because of the relatively high f4, and some reports of vignetting with the lens with the 5D camera. I have not had any problems with vignetting, and the lens has been pleanty fast enough. It is quite sharp, and nicely wide on the 5D. I think the price is'nt too bad for a real L lens. |
