Please help again, in choosing a new longish focal length lens.
I have a Nikon D50, with 3 lenses.....nikon 50mm 1.8, tamron 28-75 2.8, and sigma 105 2.8. I'm probably going to get a tokina 12-24, but also want something in a long focal length range, hopefully not tooo expensive.
I'm visiting NY soon, and thought I'd ask for advice on this before making the trip, and doing the shopping.
Thanks, |

OK.
What are you going to shoot?
What's "not tooo expensive" mean?
What do you consider "long"?
Zoom, or prime? |

Youre right, sorry, I should have been more explicit, instead of just impulsive.
Umm......I dont anticipate shooting anything tooo long......no bird or wildlife or anything....just general stuff, architecture, portrait, family.
I guess not tooo expensive means USD$500 or less.
Long? well, currently my longest is 105mm, and I was thinking of 200-300, I guess.
Probably prime would be better.......I dont foresee me needing zoom, but would accept any advice with gratitude. |

Well, the problem with buying prime telephoto glass is that it's mostly likely going to cost you more than $500 unless you buy used. Especially for quality Nikon glass. But there is always Tamron and Sigma. I was once given some invaluable advice: What focal length do you use most? For me, unfortunately, that is telephoto so I've invested most of my money in quality telephoto lenses and went mid-range on my wide inventory. How often do you plan on shooting telephoto? If it's just for general purpose, a nice Tamron would rock you world I'm sure! I've been very happy with my Tamron wide zoom, though, I've never tried a telephoto from them. Or even a Nikon zoom tele can be pretty affordable. Check out B&H if you haven't already!

This 70-300 Nikon would be agood choice. A bit over your $500 mark, but not by a lot.
Primes will cost more

| That's great. I may just extend my budget, and go for it. Would anyone recommend any equivalents from Tamron / Sigma / Tokina, etc? |

That's interesting. I always thought that the rule of thumb was that primes are cheaper than zooms. But apparently that doesn't hold true with telephoto lenses? |
