I̢۪m wondering if I broke a bone in my foot. Two weeks ago I was on a hike and about 2 miles in my foot slipped off a rock as I was stepping on to it and my foot dropped about 6 inches and the outward side slammed into a rock with all my weight behind it (my ankle was twisted inward as I slid off the rock). It hurt like hell at first, but after walking maybe another 100 yards all the pain was gone. I didn̢۪t even think about it the rest of the day and hiked another 8 miles over very rugged terrain.

Note my shoes are adventure racing shoes which are not much more of a shoe then water slippers.

That night I noticed a little pain there, a hard lump on the bone and some discoloration, but no swelling. I figured just a bruise. Now it is two weeks later, no pain whatsoever, but the hard lump is still there on the bone? Could a slight fracture be nearly pain free and heal that fast?

The original impact was easily enough to break a bone as we were hiking pretty fast, but since I quickly overcame the pain I originally ruled that out.

Not a doctor but having broken toes before I can tell you it's completely possible to have little or no pain. The first time I thought I broke a toe I had an x-ray taken. It showed I had previously broken the little toe (not the toe I went in for) in two places. The doctor said they get broken all the time and at least half the time the people think they just stubbed it and it's fine. Most of the time they don't even treat the smaller toes and just write a prescription for any pain there may be.

Why not go to a real doctor?

He or she can take a better look at it than the crowd of DPC (and probably knows more about it too ;-) )

I agree you may want to go to a dr (although if it's not bothering you, you may not want to bother), but I also wanted to offer another possibility. I was playing a game of pick-up soccer one time and someone kicked me hard in the shin (wasn't wearing shinguards). It hurt A LOT, but was clear it wasn't broken. I then developed a bump on my shinbone. My dr said sometimes if you hit a bone hard you get inflamation under the "skin" of the bone which calcifies - like a bruise of the bone. There's nothing you can do for it. Mine very slowly went away - took more than a year - and was tender for many months.

Thanks for the responses!

There is no pain, even if I press on it hard. I am on my feet a lot and I walk a lot on ground that is not foot friendly (with soes that offer little protection or support). If something needed attention I'm pretty sure I'd know. Thus, not really worth the time it takes for a doctor visit.

I'm just mostly curious if I actually broke it. It's much different then other bones I broke (finger and chipped elbow).
