I do that same thing. Steve what do you think of the tamron 28-75 2.8? I have been thinking of picking that up used on FM, I saw that you had it too, but then upgraded eventually. |

The Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 is a the best lens that I know of in that range for the money. In ways it's better than the Nikon. The extra 5mm is helpful and it focuses really, really close in. I still use it all the time, when I'm don't wish to or can't lug my better stuff.
The Nikon is sharper, has greater contrast and is more consistant throughout it's entire range. It's a beast in terms of size and weight but the superior image quality is undeniable. For the internet (DPC) and small printing there's less of a difference between the two but if you begin to print well beyond 30 inches you can see the change.
The Tammy is awesome...buy it!
Tamron should rename that lens "The DPC Special"

I didn't have time to read all the posts in this thread so forgive me in advance if I double what anyone else has said.
First of all. The camera rocks as you will or already have found out..
Battery Life is very questionable. Especially if you have all the features activated. So the extra battery is a must, In fact snab up 2 or 3 if you can find them as I have not seen many of them on the shelf at the camera store.
The Grip... Again a matter of choice. I can tell you this much about it. It helps balance the camera out quite nice when you have a longer lens attached. I wouldn't suggest using it while on a tripod because it allows a little vibration to accure. Not alot but enough to ruin some exposures. However off the pod I love the grip. I have somewhat large hands so it gives me a bit more to hold on to.
One thing I have learned about the grip is if you use the battery holder and 6 AA batts It doesnt last very long. So I wouldn't rely on that as a second battery I wouldn't even suggest it be used as a back up, The D200 eats AA's like candy.
Hope this was helpful... |

Just got my D200 on Friday night - you won't be sorry. This thing is awesome! A big step up from the D70.
I got the battery grip and love it - but I mostly shoot portrait orientation.
I just sold my D70 to buy the D200 with my extra battery. Now I'm kicking myself a little bit because Nikon had replaced one of my D70's batteries during a recall - and the replacement they sent me was a EN-EL3e, so it would have worked in my D200 (D'OH!). So if you had any batteries replaced by the recall you might want to double check it first. The D200 is battery HUNGRY!!! I used to go a week or 2 on my D70 without recharging. Now with 2 batteries in the grip I need to recharge every night. That's my only complaint though and I can live with it. |

Originally posted by Ivo: I upgraded to the D200 a while back but it was a tough toss between the D200 and the Fuji S3 Pro. I know, I know the S3 is not half the camera but the image quality is among the very best. Exceptional Dynamic range and among the best for studio/portrait photography. The buffer sucks but can be upgraded for burst shooting. This flaw resulted in the camera being overlooked by many. I have not come across anyone who said it did not produce superb images and I researched alot before taking the plunge. If it was not for speed, I'd own one. If speed is not a priority, I figure you could steal one for about $1000. As an added bonus, it accepts all of the glass for your Nikon and runs on double A's versus these stupid proprietary batteries that Nikon changes so often. just a thought. |
The Fuji S5 is not far off on the horizon as well... |
