I'd say you've captured life in the eyes well which is definitely one of the most important aspects of a portrait to me. Well done on that! The black eyeliner works with the high-contrast concept you've got going on too. But it may be a little blownout done for my taste. That's just because I perfer a wide dynamic range and smooth skin tones, but that's my subjective preference. Maybe close the aperture a bit or bump up the shutter speed. This image i really like in that respect:

But the main weakness of this image to me is it's lack of sharpness and the yellow color cast. It appears that the image was either over-cropped or is just really low resolution and shot under tungsten lights. I'd be curious to see the original shot. The only reason those factors become problems is because they seriously distract from the connection with the subject. Unless of course that's your artistic statement ;o)

But over all, I like the composition and think this is a good shot at a first self portrait. You'll soon discover that you are your best model! Just look at my portfolio, it's mostly pictures of myself!! hahaha! But most of all, don't be afraid to experiement with different lighting. Side, back, top, under, bounced, concentrated... My favorite is diffused through a window. Their are countless experiments to be done! 8o)
