Yeah, Dell's 400Gb hard drive is $204.00. I know this because I just ordered one. I just ordered one because my 160GB external HD is full, and my 3 month old computer's 250gb hard drive is full. This is getting ridiculous!! I need to start thinking about an affordable server -- or maybe Santa will bring me a terabyte - yeah right!

| I bought a Maxstor 1TB external drive last week (for work) for $429 plus tax (after rebates -- regular $529). |

That's a great price, Paul. I wish I had a larger budget today.

K, had the new HD for about a week and OMG noisy MOFO!@! It has a hummmm that can't be stopped 'cept by turning it off - vibrates my entire desk! So when I need it, I have to power up first, can't just let it run. Ugh, its always something. lol

May be a silly question, but is optical media storage out the question? I have no idea of your image accessibility needs, but do you have to have 1/2 TB available at all times or is archiving an option? DVD's can store quite a bit of info efficiently. Lifespan is pretty good until new storage alternatives are produced.

I have all of my client storage on CDs, redundant back up on the external though (I hate deleting). My biggest issues is accesibility because I shoot stock and have to keep many versions of many images ready for delivery. Oh, and I'm lazy and tend to keep outtakes even when I know I don't need them. :/

| Has anyone tried the SimpleTech SimpleDrive? ...is an external HD with USB connection and is supposed to work well on a network. I don't need fast, I just need space to store. |

what drive was that?
Seagate 320 is around 64 and a USB2/Firewire Icy Box is 24, i'd rather have that option than try and save 9 quid on a cheap and nasty drive in a box.. |
