I had a photoshoot with my neighbor's daughters yesterday and we went all around, taking various images in different settings. We have a stone bridge near our house and so I thought it might be a fun place to pose them for a shot. Well, I had them on one side of the railing and I thought I'd get on the other, to create a jail like effect, with them peering through. To get there, I had to get up and over on the other side. Well, I climbed up and jumped off. I landed, but then lost my balance and somehow tumbled over and landed on a huge honeycomb rock right on my left shoulder. WOWZA did that hurt. I thought I was going to pass out.
To make a long story short, I've been through the sweats, the chills, the shakes, the moans, and now it's sore as hell, but having gotten better, I think it isn't broken, so I'm not going to the ER. I had enough forethought to leave my camera up on the ledge too, so it wasn't harmed in any way.
Anybody else have any war stories?? |

You know, you *might* just want to get it checked out, just for fun. You may have a really cute intern or something... Seriously, you may have cracked something. Chills and sweats are worrying! |

I agree with Melethia. That sounds a lot like a shock reaction. People don't go into shock over bumps and bruises.

*fires up the car to take Judy L'Hospital*
Personally I go the ER once a month, just on the hopes of a cute intern or nurse. Unfortunately, being an exceptionally small community, the three nurses and one doctor are onto the gig :( |

It's been 27 hours and I'm so much better. I can pretty much function, but can't tie my shoe very well, or wash my hair. When the flies start buzzing, I guess I'll figure out how to do that too. LOL |

I don't know what they'd do for it besides immobilize it, but it sure sounds like a cracked bone to me (from um, experience.)
Yep, have battle scars from things like falling in a rocky creek while carrying both cameras with one on a monopod (didn't try to save myself, only the cameras...)
Hope you heal quickly! |

Judy,
I'm speaking from recent experience here, get to the ER. While you might be able to do the big things, the small motor functions (tieing shoes, etc.) are lacking. You might have cracked something or even worse.

Judy, I'm glad to hear you are feeling better but better to be safe than sorry and at least visit an immediate care center for xrays to make sure nothing is going on that will cause other damage later :-) |

When we arrived at the 3rd Oregon GTG I walked up to the group and said hello, then turned around to put my camera backpack down on a picknick table and tripped over a tree root. Luckily I landed flat on my face and chest. I had both both hands hooked into the shoulder straps as I turned, so I couldn't use my hands to break my fall. The ground was hard packed dirt with sharp gravel sticking out. It felt great on my face. I think I cracked a rib or two because my chest hurt like hell for several months. Unfortunately, nobody got pictures.
Oh well, stuff happens. :D

OK OK - I called the nearby minor emergency place and of course our sucky insurance doesn't work there. Grrrrr
I can go up the road to the hospital. They have us all on file there. LOL Actually, I've never been but hubby and kids are frequent flyers. I am getting better range of motion though. I have to close on the refinance of our house tomorrow and if I still am feeling that pinch up there, I'll go. Then alfresco can quit bitching at me. |

Just last month, while taking this waterfall picture... I had to climb so pretty good size rocks (that are what I now refer to as "snot rocks" cause when they get wet they are slicker than...well snot).
Well I got the shots and was trying to get back to the trail and realized I really couldn't go back the way I came so I had to look for a new way.
I contemplated various escape routes before I finally decided the best would be to drop down off of one rock down about 6 feet to a small little patch of sand (barly big enough for both feet) that laid between more rocks.
With camera on tripod in hand I sat on my rear and scooted to the edge, planned my take off and landing then took the plunge. Upon impact my right foot hit a small "snot rock" and instantly slid forward wedging itself under a boulder in front of me. My left leg landed ok but since by right slid out from under me all my weight got thrown backwards and I landed on my butt then fell against the other rocks...foot still under boulder.
I quickly sat up and prayed my foot wasn't broken or wedged for good (especially since there are signs everywhere warning of the slick rocks), I leaned more forward to take the pressure off my ankle and luckily slid my foot right out. Lucky for me, just hurt a little no major damage.
Then came the time to check the camera...oh no did it hit any rocks on the way down? Luckily no, the camera was untouched...whew.
When I got back to the trail with my friends, I asked if they saw what just happend to me. One said she saw me on the rocks then didn't see me on the rocks, so wasn't sure where I went, but then saw me stand so figured I was ok.
(I hope your shoulder is ok.)

Judy - you really should get the shoulder checked out. You could have cracked your shoulder blade or torn your rotator cuff.
As for war stories...well most of you know about my fall through the ice into a creek last winter. Then there was the ledge I jumped off of with ten pounds of camera gear in my sling pack - the jump from the ledge to the platform was higher than I judged and I herniated two discs in my back. This happened this past August and is just now getting to where I can hike with my camera gear again with only slight pain. So far I've stayed safe in Alaska (knocking on a wood table right now).
Please Judy - stay safe and get checked out. It wont hurt to get checked. |

you'll definitely want that checked out. I sounds like you can't put your arm over your head or do minute tasks. I had the same symptoms when I seperated my shoulder. One time in karate class, my overly uppity partner was locking my arm behind my head and I felt it slide out before he stopped. Man, that hurt, It hung a couple of inches lower than my other arm and my arm didn't want to move as much as I was telling it to, but it definitely wasn't completely dislocated.
I had an exam and an MRI done, but they said it was probably just swelling. It wasn't until after a couple of weeks in physical therepy and intense aching that it fnally "popped" back into place. The moral: if it still is really hurting in a week, but your doctor says that it's probably nothing...DON'T listen. Trust me you don't want to go thru what I did. Get a second opinion from a sports therepist and visit a physical therepist if you need to. You might have knocked it out or even broken it. So go to the MD and get some good drugs ;P asap!
jk, good luck! |

Sounds a little "collarbone-y" to me too. The not being able to reach up (hair) or out (shoes) part (also rotator cuff-y from experience) Supposedly Collearbones hurt a lot, tho' and heal VERY fast and you'd hate for them to have to rebreak it to fix it because you delayed.
Either way best to Know and excellent it it turns out to be a bruise. |

Go to the doctor. I have a friend who had a similar attitude to going to thet ER (as in he didn't want to bother them and didn't like going either) and he walked around with a broken hand for a week before finally going and the doctors weren't too pleased.
He was convinced it was just sprained a bit, I mean the swelling was going down everyday and he could move his fingers. |

Hey Judy, I'm glad to hear that your feeling better - but it would be better to have it checked (sounds like a really bad fall you had there).
All best wishes,

I swore the Hippocritic oath after finishing an online MD program. It wasn't until later that I found out I should have sworn the Hippocratic oath, but it was too late - I made a commitment. :P
Judy - If for no other reason than to get some prescription pain killers. ;-)
Hope you recover fully and quickly. |

Sweats chills and shakes are a sure indication that something is wrong.
Yes, similar experience for me last year but it was after the "combat" went for a photoshoot with all the gorgeous Icelandic guys arghhh why did I turn 50 so quickly...they were all so wonderful to this old gal :) the next day there were frost formations on puddles everywhere and I stepped onto an invisible ice on the pavement...first reaction, chills, nausea and shakes, my mother took me to the ER on a Sunday afternoon to get a cast for a badly broken wrist, the doctor on duty was Italian, very cute and funny, glad I went to the ER straight away. |
