Now that the Morning and Free Study XIV challenges are over I can finally share this with the group.

I recently purchased the Canon 70-200 4.0L based on its reputation for being the sharpest lens in its class, even sharper than the 2.8 version.

Here are my entries for the challenages along side the uncropped original. Check out the severity of the crop and how well the sharpness held up. Granted the post processing was delicate to bring out the sharpness without blowing out the image quality.

Morining

Free Study XIV

This little guy was quick too. I saw him getting ready to jump so I snapped the shot. As I pressed the shutter he disappeared. I managed to catch him in mid-jump. 1/640 of a second wasn't quick enough to stop the action.

What was he jumping for? The bug he's eating in the Morning entry.

All this happened in our front garden the same day I was shooting the Lighting challenge.

One morning yielded two 7+ shots and one 6.38 shot - all taken in a span of one hour within 10 meters.

Conclusions?

1. The 70-200 4.0L is one amazingly sharp lens
2. You don't have to go very far from home to get some high scoring images.

It's a great lense. Can't say I use it as much as I planned to when I bought it, but you know it's going to give quality results every time you bolt it on.

Lately I've been thinking of selling it to partially fund a 100-400 L purchase.... damn this addiction.

I love the little lizard guy - I had those in my back yard in Florida and would love to just sit and watch them. Nice work with that lens! I have such a hard time realizing the possibilities with it because I can't hold it still enough, I think. Maybe I'll get a tripod collar for it but I can't see lugging that tripod through the zoo... Great day's work!

I also love my 70-200 f/4L. Indeed it is a very sharp lens and the contrast and colors are always right on. You will not regret having it.

Yes, it's a great lens but I think the credit goes first to the photographer. Excellent work.
I should post point #2 on my refrigerator and read it often.
You don't have to go very far from home to get some high scoring images.
Good advice! :)
